The Trésoncle Balconies circular loop starting from Savigny

A beautiful, long hike in the hills above Savigny, alternating between orchards, mountain pastures and wild countryside, with walkers, mountain bikers and paragliders all sharing the terrain harmoniously. The first, uphill section follows mainly the ridge line separating La Turdine from Le Trésocle to the paragliders’ launch site, whilst the second section is relatively flat as far as Le Crêt d’Arjoux. The third section consists mainly of the descent back to Savigny.
The route takes you up to higher ground, offering magnificent views over the entire Ain plain, the Beaujolais region and, in fine weather, the Alpine range.
Furthermore, you’ll discover an area that offers plenty of hiking opportunities.
At the start or finish, you can also take the opportunity to visit the beautiful village of Savigny with its yellow-stone church or its dovecote, located at the starting point of the hike.

Description of the walk

There are plenty of car parks available in Savigny, at Place de l’Église, Place de la Mairie or the football stadium, but the Écoles car park on Rue des Écoles is just a few metres from the starting point.

(S/E) Head to 11 Rue du Ressy, next to the dovecote. Continue up Rue du Ressy until the end of the tarmac section. Pass the large dairy farm to reach mountain bike trail no. 75.

(1) Turn right uphill, then turn left onto the shared track no. 75 and 73. You will reach a multi-way junction.

(2) Head straight on into Chemin du Châtaignier, where you’ll find another multi-way junction. There’s a picnic area and a hunter’s hut here.

(3) Turn left onto Chemin des Quatre Vents, mountain bike route no. 73. Follow the path uphill along the edge of Bois Carnoux until you reach the Le Bigot–Savigny–Saint Romain junction.

(4) Start the climb opposite, now following MTB route no. 73. Reach the D33.

(5) Cross it carefully, continue straight ahead and take the first turn right then left onto the next path to head towards Mont Popey. Continue through the woods until you reach the crossroads marked by a cross above Bancillon.

(6) Leave the Route de Bancillon on your left and continue the climb to reach the multi-way junction at the Croix du Crêt.

(7) Head straight ahead, still on MTB Trail No. 73, and walk through the woods then across the field to finish the climb at Crêt des Houx, the paragliding launch site.

(8) Begin a short descent; MTB trail no. 73 is also marked in yellow. You will reach a road leading towards the D7; this is the Saint-Forgeux – Le Fenouillet – Ancy junction.

(9) Continue straight ahead, on a very gentle climb, and arrive on the D7 at the Croix des Humberts crossroads, where there is a wayside cross.

(10) Cross the D7 with care to take the Route de Montmenot opposite and, at the top of the climb, reach the hamlet of Les Humberts and the GAEC Lepin farm (No. 520).

(11) Take the path on the right, marked in yellow; shortly after the agricultural warehouse, turn onto the track slightly to the left where the signpost ends. Continue along a road to reach the centre of the hamlet of Montmenot.

(12) Follow the road towards Saint-Julien sur Bibost; as you leave the woods, take the right-hand bend, continue along Impasse Bigaudière and walk past the farm on the left at no. 4550. Go down the path, which is also MTB trail no. 72 in the opposite direction. Reach the crossroads at Petite Bigaudière.

(13) Continue straight ahead, pass a house, then begin a short climb. Cross a road and descend slightly, following yellow markings to reach a multi-way junction.

(14) Continue left along the wide path and cross another road before reaching a rest area.

(15) Continue towards Crêt d'Arjoux. Ignore the first two junctions and continue climbing for about 300 m until you reach the first path on the left.

(16) Take the path on the left and follow the yellow markings. After an initial flat section, the route alternates between ascents and descents as it winds around Crêt d'Anjou. Continue through the woods and, upon emerging after the small abandoned house at Bas d'Anjou, you will come out onto a small tarmac road.

(17) Take the path on the right and, after a short climb, reach the hamlet and the Bombeynon farm.

(18) Turn left to descend to the D33.

(19) Cross it carefully and continue straight ahead on the tarmac road; this is the Chemin des Mayottes and mountain bike trail No. 73. Pass the Mayottes farm on your left and, further on, you’ll come to the junction of the GRP® des Monts et Côteaux du Lyonnais.

(20) Take this straight ahead and follow the yellow and red markings. Follow the ridge path to reach the hamlet of Les Quatre Pierres.

(21) Turn left, staying on the GRP®, pass Ronzière, and continue to the Ruisseau du Trésoncle.
(22) Cross the stream at the ford, take the road on the right marked in yellow and red running alongside the stream. You will reach a roundabout at the entrance to Salvigny. Take the road going uphill on the left; this is Rue de la Rivière, marked in yellow, then Rue des Écoles. You will then reach the school car park (S/E).

I went for a solo hike today, which took just over 5 hours, including a lunch break at picnic area no. 15. A very pleasant walk; the main challenge was its length. There were quite a few tarmac sections, but they weren’t busy, so it was still enjoyable.
Be careful, however, as at one point the path is no longer maintained (a sign discourages walkers from continuing in that direction), and I had to walk about 500m along a tiny stretch of path through tall grass and nettles. I think it was between markers 13 and 14. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible either.
The final descent is a bit steep and damp, so be sure to watch your step.

Apart from that, it was very pleasant.

A lovely, easy walk. Beautiful scenery all along the route, with cherry orchards in bloom, broom and acacias on a lovely sunny day. A bit too much tarmac for my liking, but it’s hard to avoid it. Nevertheless, it’s a lovely walk. There’s a lovely picnic area at point 715 near Jailly.
We went as far as Crêt d’Arjoux. It’s not worth the effort as there’s no view. The descent to Bas d’Arjoux is passable but very steep. Best avoided in wet weather.

A easy route, apart from its length.
In fact, we shortened the route by about 4 km without altering the elevation gain. At the Croix du Crêt (7), we headed towards Ancy, then passed through Le Mollon to rejoin the route at point 15 (picnic area). The section leading to Le Mollon is a bit steep and follows a small tarmac road.
Beautiful scenery all along the route.
A lovely walk.

A lovely circular walk with few people about, a few short climbs, but nothing too daunting; I completed the walk in 3 hours and 38 minutes
The weather was perfect: sunny but a bit on the cool side

A walk on a sunny Sunday. The route itself was very easy to follow; I used the app a few times to double-check the route, but I had no trouble finding my way.
I’d say about half of it is on tarmac roads, which must be tough in the height of summer.
Otherwise, I don’t think it’s very difficult; I’d rate it as difficult for the length and moderate for the elevation gain.
But a good walker can manage it without any trouble.
The tarmac roads are very quiet, with practically no traffic.
The descent between the points (17) and (18) was very muddy and full of stones following the previous day’s rain.
No worries about the picnic; there are plenty of designated spots for that.
It took me 6 hours and 40 minutes to cover 24.14 km, including a snack break.
I met very few people, just a few hunters and mountain bikers.
Thanks to the author for this walk.
