The three viewpoints: Le Replat, Sur la Roche, and Sur les Grés in Montbrillant

Starting from Montbrillant, a steady climb up to Septmoncel via the Chemin des Moines, the reward being three viewpoints: two with aerial views of the town of Saint-Claude, and the third overlooking La Roche Blanche.
The paths are very easy to walk on, with no technical difficulties.

Description of the walk

On arriving at Montbrillant, there is an industrial cheese factory on the right; you can park in the car park a little further on, just before the cluster of houses in the village. As close as possible to the Chemin des Moines.

(S/E) Walk back up the A-road for about a hundred metres; be careful as there is heavy traffic and the road is narrow. You must be very vigilant.
Leave the road and take the path on the left, marked by old metal beams and signage.

(1) Ignore a path leading off to the left towards a building site and continue straight up the hill. Continue along the Chemin des Moines to the hamlet of Les Curtillets. A long, steep climb on a very passable track.

(2) At Les Curtillets, take the tarmac road on the left and follow it. A sign indicates that this is a roller-ski trail. This trail leads to the first viewpoint: Sur le Replat (elevation 1024m).

(3) Take the path that begins a descent to the right of the paragliding launch site.
You will find yourself on the Sentier des Diots, a signposted route that forms part of the itineraries recommended by the local Tourist Office.
Follow this path, which descends initially through woodland. You will then reach a pasture area, where the path climbs for a considerable distance.

(4) Do not turn left onto the tarmac road leading to a farm, but take the path that climbs up through the field towards the woods. This path then runs alongside the forest for a good distance before heading uphill through the boxwood, over fairly stony ground, to the Belvédère de la Pointe de la Roche.

(5) At the top of this section, the bushes thin out a little.
A path leads off to the left to a rock from which you can see the Queue de Cheval waterfall (a good height and a slight fan shape that justifies its name). Here too, the view is quite interesting.
Continue along the Sentier des Diots, where the yellow markings are fairly regular. The walk through the woods is pleasant. If you’re lucky, you might spot a deer.

(6) At this junction:
- you can make a round trip to the Belvédère de la Fenêtre on the Sentier des Diots and then return to the crossroads,
- on the return, turn left onto theGRP® du Tour du Haut-Jura Sud, marked in red and yellow, leaving the Sentier des Diots. The path leads to a place called Le Rafour. Turn right onto a small tarmac road and follow it; a little further on, it turns into a track.

(7) Turn right and continue along theGRP® to reach Les Curtillets.

(2) Turn left to reach the viewpoint: Sur le Grès. To do this, follow the signs for the Sentier des Chamois.

(8) Return to Les Curtillets via the same route.

(2) Turn left to begin the descent to Montbrillant via the reverse route of the outward journey and reach the Montbrillant car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(3) Sur le Replat: this viewpoint offers a view of the town of Saint-Claude and its surroundings. A paragliding launch pad has been set up.
:8:: Sur les Grés: this viewpoint offers a splendid view of La Roche Blanche, with its syncline characteristic of Jura geology. Two benches are available for a rest.

A lovely walk with stunning views – definitely worth doing. For those who don’t want to tackle the whole long climb, you can park at the Replant football ground.

A very pleasant walk for the whole family starting from Le Replant; this avoids the steep climb for those who might find it difficult.

A lovely walk with some beautiful views. The route description is accurate. On the way back, a stop at the cheese shop is a must, given the quality of the products.
