Short Chamois Trail at Septmontcel

A very steep section of the Sentier des Chamois trail offers views of the rugged terrain of the Flumen Gorges and the Gendarme's Hat, as well as a cool break at the waterfall. You will need good walking shoes as the slopes are steep.

Description of the walk

In Septmoncel, park in the public car park opposite the town hall.

(S/E) Leave the village via Rue du Mont, heading towards the stadium, and continue until you reach it.

(1) Shortly after the stadium and the information boards, take the yellow-marked path on the left towards Sur les Grés

(2) At the Sur les Grés viewpoint, admire the landscape over the steep slopes above the Flumen Gorges and as far as Saint-Claude. Take the path on the left that runs along the cliff and descends steeply through grassy, flower-filled fields and then through boxwood bushes.

(3) At the intersection of the paths, continue down the path, following the signs for "Saut du Chien". When you reach the road, follow the path opposite, which cuts across a bend, follow the road to the left for a short distance, cut across another bend, then follow the road to the right.

(4) At the promontory with a bench, admire the Saut du Chien waterfall. There is an information panel. In one of the bends, there is a beautiful view of the Chapeau du Gendarme, a geological curiosity of the Jura. Turn back a few metres and go down the path on the right, below the road, to the Moulin d'Aval waterfall.

(5) The waterfall, refreshing in its green setting, ends in a natural pool. Go back up on the left, following the stream. Join the road and, turning left, retrace your steps, cutting across and following the road alternately.

(3) At the intersection of the paths, already past the descent, continue to the right towards "Septmoncel" along a small, gently sloping, shaded path.

(6) After about a kilometre, take the grassy path on the left to climb up to the village of Montépile. When you reach the houses, take the street on the right, then straight ahead on Rue de Montépile, and take the first street on the left. Then turn right across the meadow. Take the quiet road on the right, which slopes gently downhill. Join the Route de Genève D436 in a bend. Keep left until you reach the centre of Septmoncel (S/E).
