Description of the walk

Start from the village centre on the main square (parking available nearby). On this square, there is a small basketball court and a statue of the Virgin Mary.

(S/E) Take the narrow lane that runs below the square (from here you can see the little castle of Fays behind you as you look south-west) and join the Route du Labôru, which climbs up to your right.

(1) Follow this road for about 1 km. You’ll pass a riding centre, amongst other things. On a clear day, you’ll be treated to a beautiful view of the Hautes-Fagnes plateau.
At the end of this road, you’ll reach the Voie des Trois Bonniers.

(2) Turn right for 50 m (watch out for cars; you can take cover on the other side of the safety barrier to the left of the road), then turn left onto a dirt track. Follow this track until you come to a farm, which you pass by.

(3) Turn left at the junction (do not go as far as the main road). Follow this track (Fontaine Jacmin) and keep to your left at all times. You will cross the Voie des Trois Bonniers again.

(4) Cross over to continue along the dirt track opposite. After 500 m, you’ll reach the Route de La Croix de Fays; take this to your right for 500 m (watch out for cars – keep to the left!). Continue until you reach a dirt track through the fields on your left.

(5) Follow this path until you reach the Chemin des Bœufs, a housing estate with newer houses. Turn right onto the dirt track and follow it for 500 m until you reach a junction.

(6) Turn left and start heading downhill. At the first junction after a few bends, take a sharp left-hand bend (green arrow for the mountain bike route) and continue for 600 m along this track, keeping to the left at all times, to reach Rue Armand Enkart at the foot of the motorway bridge.

(7) Go under the bridge and turn left straight onto a dirt track that runs alongside the motorway.

(8) At the first junction, turn left before the sign for ‘Polleur’ to follow the Thier de Polleur upstream to the Route de la Croix de Fays.

(9) Cross the bridge over the motorway and turn onto the path on the right to follow the motorway. The path eventually turns 90° to the left and reaches a junction a little further on.

(10) Turn left towards the isolated house on your left and head down the road on your left to reach the village of Fays. Turn left to walk past the grand Château de Fays, then right to head downhill and reach the Place de Fays (S/E).

I went through the village of Polleur to extend the journey and avoid a stretch along the motorway.

Thank you for your feedback. I did look for an alternative, but it either significantly lengthened the hike or took us along busy roads. I preferred to opt for the route along the motorway, which is still a country road.

The drive back up the motorway to Polleur is very noisy and uninteresting... Even if it means extending the journey a little, it would be better to find an alternative route... GH
