The Ru du Grand Chawion

The Ru du Grand Chawion is a very pleasant stream that flows north of Spa and is worth following upstream to its wildest parts. The return journey takes you through the beautiful woods of Staneux and a section ofthe GR®5.

Description of the walk

Start at the large free car park at Spaloumont, near the upper part of the cemetery and the thermal baths.

(S/E) Facing the forest, go up Chemin de Frahinfaz on the right for about 100 metres until you reach a clearing on the left and turn into it. With your back to the bench, ignore the track on the right and turn left, then immediately right onto a little-used firebreak that descends and ends with a steep passage.

(1) At the bottom of the valley, turn right onto Chemin Fond Mignol, wade across the stream and follow the track uphill.

(2) At the junction with Chemin Princesse Clémentine, turn left and then quickly, at a bend, turn right to climb Ru du Petit Chawion for about 200 m.

(3) Take the path on the left that climbs up the side of the valley. Ignore the paths branching off to the right and left. At the top of the hill, continue straight ahead to descend into the next valley.

(4) At the junction with Promenade du Golf, turn left.
This section offers views of the protected marshlands of Grand Chawion below.

(5) At a large T-junction, turn right, cross the stream and then turn immediately right onto the path that climbs up the Ru du Grand Chawion. Ignore all the paths on the left.

(6) When the main path leaves the Ru to climb up to the left, look for a track on the right that crosses a small ford and follow this track as close as possible to the Ru. Towards the end of this wild section, a track (not shown on the map) allows you to cross a marshy area and join a trail.

(7) Take the track on the left, then immediately at a V-shaped fork, go up to the left.

(8) After about 200 metres, turn left onto a wide path and continue straight ahead at both crossroads.

(9) At thethird T-junction, continue to the right.

(10) At the junction with a firebreak, follow it to the left.

(11) This path crosses theGR®5, which you follow to the left and stay on.

(5) Back at this point, go up Chemin Princesse Clémentine and quickly leave it on the right to go down to Étang de Chawion. This is a good place to take a relaxing break. Cross the pond on the dyke, then turn left onto theGR® to Parking de Spaloumont (S/E).

The forest trails are simply charming. Sometimes you can spot a squirrel, a hare or even a deer in the bushes. Point 5 is a pleasant place to stop for a rest, as there is a bench there. The most delightful section is undoubtedly the little path that runs alongside the stream between points 5 and 7. The stream is often hidden in tall grass and bushes, but you can almost always hear its cheerful murmur. The footbridges that were once swept away by the force of the water are a reminder of the 2021 flood. Today, brand new bridges have taken their place and make crossing the stream a pleasant experience.

Superb course. Diverse. Lots of undergrowth, ideal in hot weather. A delight.

Beautiful, accessible hike, but GPS essential
The paths are easy and mostly shaded in the woods, making for a pleasant walk even in hot weather.

A very beautiful route, but please note that the end of the route is now inaccessible because the area around Chawion Pond has been fenced off due to problems with the stability of the dyke.
It is therefore no longer possible to cross the stream and you must stay on the Princesse Clémentine path until you reach points 2 and 3 and return via the starting route.
In addition, the GPX file is essential to avoid getting lost.

Hello, given the multitude of trails and paths on this route, the paper version is very difficult to follow, but with the help of the GPX track, it's a real treat.
Thank you very much for this wonderful walk.

Indeed, as indicated in the information sheet, the use of the Visorando app is strongly recommended due to the large number of junctions. I tried to be as precise as possible in the description for those who would only be using the paper version. Clearly, it is not yet perfect. Happy hiking!

It is more prudent to take a GPS with you on this hike, as there are many opportunities to get lost right from the start.
