The Val de Bairon

Park at the Digue des Six Pales, on the eastern shore.

(S/E) Take the road leading up towards Sauville and, before the top of the hill, turn left onto the ridge path. Follow it straight on, heading due north, ignoring the side paths. You will come to a cross path.

(1) At the small wood, turn left, pass the water tower and head down to the Derrière le Terme farm. At the farm, turn right then immediately left onto the downhill road to the Croix de Touly junction.

(2) Continue straight on towards the Croix Saint-Guillaume and then the Croix Jean Maurice.

(3) Continue along the road leading to Louvergny church. Pass between the church and the wash house.

(4) Continue left along Rue de l'Église to cross through the village and leave it behind.

(5) At the bend in the road where it turns left, keep to the right.
Before the farm, turn left onto a path between the pastures.

(6) Cross the first stream via the footbridge and continue immediately to the right, past the cottage. The path runs alongside the stream and then the Vieil Étang to the dyke.

(7) Turn left to cross the dyke, which leads back to the car park (S/E).

Lake Bairon, between Le Chesne and Louvergny, 20 km north of Vouziers via the D 977 and D 991.

Lake Bairon is a reservoir on the Ardennes Canal, created in the 1830s and 1840s. It is fed by the Val de Bairon stream, which once powered forges and mills. The Vieil Étang was developed in the Middle Ages by the monks of Mont-Dieu to serve as a fish pond. Since 2012, the site has been designated a Site of Community Importance under the Natura 2000 scheme. It is currently home to a large number of protected birds, such as the sandpiper, the hobby, the grey heron and various species of duck.
It is also home to protected amphibians, reptiles and other invertebrates. The Vieil Étang in particular is a veritable treasure trove of biodiversity.
