The walk around the Vieil Étang de Bairon

Park at the Digue des Six Pales in Bairon, situated between the Vieil Étang and Lake Bairon, on their eastern shore.

(S/E) Set off north-west and follow a small road running alongside the lake on your left.

(1) After a right-hand bend, leave the road and head down to the left onto a path to reach the shore of the Vieil Étang. Follow the ‘Sentier Natura 2000’ signs to reach La Hobette. Cross a footbridge over a stream.

(2) Turn left before a second footbridge and walk alongside a stream on your right. Continue straight on along the narrow forest track, then walk alongside the Vieil Étang on your left. This will take you to the embankment.

(3) Turn left, walk along the embankment between the two bodies of water and return to the car park (S/E).

Part of the path remains damp for part of the year. Please wear wellington boots or high-top shoes.
Take care when walking alongside or crossing district roads

Starting from the intermediate dyke that separates the pond from the lake, this 4.5 km circular walk leads to Louvergny – its charming historic centre is well worth a visit – where the Bairon stream feeds several bodies of water. By following the advice and explanations on the information boards, you may spot a coot, a great crested grebe, a spot-billed duck, a grey heron or even a great egret. The area is also home to frogs, bats, butterflies and other remarkable snakes.
