Description of the walk

Parking is available in front of the Auberge du Canon at the end of Rue de la Vallée from Zillisheim.

(S/E) Take the path that climbs towards the Bielsbach Pond, marked with a yellow triangle.

(1) Before the pond, take the path on the right, marked with a blue cross, towards "Paul Rath Vierge". After a few hundred metres, turn left onto a smaller path, marked with a red disc, towards the Virgin Mary statue. At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead on a carriageway marked with a yellow ring.

(2) At the Vierge de Paul Rath, turn right and follow the yellow ring and cross. When you see Luemschwiller, you have two options:

  • either stay on this marked path, straight ahead towards the village ( see Practical Information);
  • or (option shown on the map and described here), take the path on the right, then left, which passes in front of a reservoir.

(3) Take the dyke on the right and at the next intersection, turn left onto the path that joins theGR®531marked with a blue rectangle towards Buschberg on the right.

(4) Climb up towards Buschsberg. Very soon, the path descends slightly to a three-way junction. Leave theGR®531and follow the yellow ring markings on the right. After a crossroads, descend to the left until you reach a junction of several paths and a car park.

(5) Turn right onto the path marked with a red diamond, then follow the blue ring towards the German military cemetery. Cross this site in silence and exit at the rear to the north. Turn left, following the signs to the Saint-Brice Chapel.

(6) At the chapel, continue along the red diamond and blue ring to reach the historic site of Britzgyberg.

(7) Continue along the path for a few hundred metres towards the summit.

(8) At the top of Britzgyberg, turn right and follow the red diamond to the Grand Canyon site. First turn right then left, ignoring a path on the left and another on the right. At the next crossroads, turn left until you reach a crossroads near a hut.

(9) In front of the hut, continue straight ahead on the left towards the Grand Canyon and follow the markings.

(10) When you arrive at the Grand Canon platform, visit this renovated site dating back to theFirst World War. Then continue along this path and return to the car park of the Auberge du Canon (S/E).

Thanks to the author of this lovely route.
A very beautiful walk in the woods with few paved sections. The impressive German military cemetery in Illfurth and a wonderful surprise with the discovery of the site of the big cannon.

A varied route through the forest (with magnificent undergrowth), hilly (but without any steep slopes) with beautiful landscapes to discover in good weather. There is also historical interest with the German cemetery in Illfurth and, of course, the Grand Canon, which the association has greatly enhanced by allowing access to the galleries. A very beautiful walk combining the route and the guided tour.

:-) We did it with our grandchildren, and we had the same experience, but once we got to the big cannon, they didn't want to leave!
Glad you enjoyed the hike anyway.
See you soon

I loved it. The children (aged 5 and 8) complained a little because it was a bit long.

The time estimates on VisoRando are always optimistic.
Instead of 3 hours 50 minutes, it took us 6 hours, including 1 hour of breaks.
Well, our children are a bit slow. We'll train them more.

We'll do it again!
