Park in the car park at the village hall in Caussols
(S/E) Go to the roundabout next to the car park where you will find marker 30 and the start of the GR®4.
Take the Chemin de l'Église, a tarmac road that continues along the Chemin de Notre Dame de Calern to the entrance of a private property. At the end of the tarmac road, continue straight ahead on the stony path. You will reach a crossroads at the edge of a fence.
(1) Pass to the left of the fence and continue along the path, following the red and white markings. Continue uphill to reach the crossroads at the cave chapel with a cairn. There is also another landmark on the left: a red and white cross painted on a rock at ground level.
(2) Turn left onto the path at a 180° angle. Walk for about 10 metres, then turn slightly right onto the uphill path and walk for about 20 metres to reach the cave.
The entrance to the chapel cave is hidden among several trees.
Close the gate to the cave securely, then return to the GR®4 trail via the same route and head back to the crossroads.
Turn left towards the domes of the observatory, which can be seen in the distance, following the GR®4 along the cliff. At marker 50, continue east towards the domes, leaving theGR®4here. Enjoy the view before reaching the Côte d'Azur Observatory.
(3) Cross the inhabited area from west to east, passing a tower called the Tour de Garde. Continue straight ahead at marker 48. Keep going in the same direction, leave the tarmac road and head east towards the nearby area reserved for model aircraft, located just after the inhabited area.
(4) Continue left on the grassy, north-east track. This track seems to lead to a bunker-shaped water tower at the top of a hill. Then join the Aven de Calernaum, a funnel-shaped cavity. Stop there to explore it with caution.
(5) Head south off the trail and continue almost straight ahead for a few hundred metres until you reach the trail along the edge of the cliff.
Note on this section: if you have a compass, see the recommendations in the Practical Information section.
At the trail, turn left to reach the crossroads at marker 47.
(6) Turn right and begin the descent with caution. Follow the well-marked yellow signs to the paved road below the cliff.
(7) Turn right, head towards the nearby crossroads and turn left onto the paved Roman road. Continue along this road, following the yellow markings. You will reach marker 44 at the crossroads with the D12.
(8) Cross it carefully. Continue along the clearly visible Roman road paved with stones and slabs. Note the 2,000-year-old historical heritage here. Continue along this Roman road, then follow a path. You will reach the junction with signpost 43.
(9) Turn right then left and continue along the road until you reach the civil aviation site. You will arrive in front of a large imposing stone wall with the inscription "Aviation Civile". Move to the left side of the wall, which has a wide pedestrian passageway and starts at marker 40. Turn right just after the wall. The path immediately turns into a concrete road. Follow it to the crossroads at marker 41.
(10) Turn right. The yellow markings are very clear, but stay alert as in some places a line of cairns in a stony field marks the route. Continue until you reach marker 52.
(11) Cross the road. The barely visible path continues west towards the wooded area, slightly below the road. Continue along this beautiful path. The well-marked trail then winds between woods and rocky outcrops. After this wooded area, the trail is open, with cairns marking the way down into a grassy valley. A wooden fence at the edge of the valley blocks the trail.
(12) Turn left and follow a grassy path towards the woods. Head west until you reach the paved road. There, turn right to reach the access road to the village of Caussols below. At marker 51, turn left and proceed with caution along the side of the road until you reach the village and the car park at Caussols village hall (S/E).
