From Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey, take the D5 then the D12 towards Cassols. Park in the village car park.
(S/E) The walk starts at the crossroads below the car park at marker 30. At the roundabout, follow theGR® 4 to the left, which takes the paths of the Church, then of Notre-Dame de Calern, before giving way to a stony path leading to the foot of a rocky outcrop. You’ll reach a junction.
(1) Leave theGR® 4 to the left, then a few metres further on, turn right onto a path marked by a cairn which leads to the entrance of the cave/chapel. You will come to another crossroads.
(2) Take the path above the cave to reach the plateau.
(3) At the junction, turn left until you reach the next crossroads.
(4) Keep left on the cairn-marked path towards the summit of Calern (1,458m).
(5) Panoramic view of the Mercantour and Argentera peaks. Then head down to the right along a track, which you should follow to the junction above the ridge.
(3) Continue straight on to the next junction (marker 50,GR®4).
(6) Continue straight on until you reach a road leading to an observatory.
(7) You can stop for a picnic and admire Antti Lovag’s “bubble” houses. Resume the route along the ridge to marker 47.
(8) This marker on the right signals the start of a fairly stony descent, which should be tackled with caution. Ignore a track on the right, then at the next junction continue straight ahead and then turn right onto the path. Join the track further down and turn right, then right again onto a path. Continue along the descending path to the main road.
(9) First turn left then right to join the old Roman road that linked Ventium (Vence) to Castellanne. Continue to the next junction.
(10) Take a barely visible path on the right to head back towards Caussols. Follow it to the next junction.
(11) Turn right, then veer left until you reach the road.
(12) Turn right again until you reach the A-road at marker 51.
(13) Keep left. Continue to marker number 30 and the starting point. (S/E)
