Description of the walk

To get to La Molière from Autrans (Easter to the end of October only): follow the Route du Tunnel du Mortier (towards La Sûre), then the Route Forestière des Feneys and continue left on the Route Forestière de la Molière until you reach the La Molière plateau. Leave your car in the car park.

During the summer season, a shuttle bus runs between Autrans and La Molière.

(S/E) From the orientation table (magnificent view of Mont Blanc and the Alps), facing the view, turn left.

(1) At the crossroads, take the path on the right that descends towards "Le Sornin". Discover the sharp limestone pavement (limestone rocks with gullies and crevices). Continue until you reach the intersection with theGR®®9.

(2) Take it on the right. Continue through the forest until you reach the Sornin plateau. Stop off at the village of Sornin.

(3) Retrace your steps and rejoin theGR®®9towards "Engins" (south-west). Continue through the forest.

(4) At the crossroads, leave the main path and turn west towards La Molière. The descent is now over. You must now climb back up to the starting point, which is a little tiring but superb! (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,633 m
  2. 1 : km 0.82 - alt. 1,617 m - The trail starts on the right at Le Sornin
  3. 2 : km 2.46 - alt. 1,535 m - GR9
  4. 3 : km 3.83 - alt. 1,363 m - Village of Sornin
  5. 4 : km 5.91 - alt. 1,180 m - Climb back up to La Molière
  6. S/E : km 8.22 - alt. 1,633 m - Table d'orientation de La Molière

Notes

Don't leave without water and a map, take binoculars and wear very good walking shoes. Remember to take a snack with you.
Between points (4) and (S/E), in some places the path is more or less well marked depending on foot traffic and livestock.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

From La Molière, there is a view of the Alps towards Mont Blanc. Depending on the season, there is some very interesting flora and fauna. Among other things, you can discover alpine gentian, alpine violet and daffodils, and in the air, peregrine falcons along the cliff of La Molière and, with a little luck, bearded vultures. on the ground, you may be lucky enough to spot rock ptarmigan, chamois and, above all, marmots and butterflies. Please do not pick the flowers; leave them for other hikers to enjoy. In the hollow of the Molière plateau, at the Molière refuge, as well as enjoying a delicious meal, take a look at the shepherd's photos.
Don't leave without visiting Autrans, Lans en Vercors and, of course, sampling some local cheeses.

a beautiful hike done in reverse so as not to end with the climb, going to and from the DENT DU LOUP with a short detour towards the SURE to pass through PLENOUZE. Total: 13 km, 630 m elevation gain

A beautiful hike with stunning views and lovely passages through the woods.
The directions provided mean you don't have to do the big climb on the way down (between 4 and 5).
We started the hike from Engins because we got the starting point wrong
In any case, it worked out well because to start from La Molière, you need the right equipment for the snowy road
Another advantage of starting from Engins is that you climb up to La Molière, then it's all downhill.

Hello Oshean,
Sorry, but the route you're referring to is not the one described and mapped out from La Molière, passing through the Plateau de Sornin and returning to La Molière.

route classified as difficult by other programmes
difficult because it is recommended to return from La Croisette to La Molière, with a significant elevation gain over just 2 kilometres
If you start from Engins, you must start from the village car park, which adds another 2 kilometres, making a total of approximately 11.5 kilometres.

Hello sliderflys,
Thank you for your feedback on this hike.
I would like to come back to two points you raised:

  • the signposting: please do not take the signposting into account in your ratings.
  • doing the hike in reverse: everyone is free to choose their own route and how they do it. Please note that on all the routes I describe, I try to give the best direction, either for reasons of effort or difficulty, or for reasons of quality in terms of discovering the route. For me, the best part is always at the end of the hike, as far as possible!

Hike done in reverse (descent from La Molière to the GR9). Tough on the knees on the way down .
Very beautiful route with breathtaking views of Moucherotte and the Belledone mountain range.
Be careful with the somewhat "light" signposting on the descent through the mountain pasture.

we started the hike well, but we must have missed a spot because we ended up back on the same trail instead of completing the entire loop. It wasn't the fault of the person who mapped out the route. We met someone who thought we were going too far downhill, so we ended up taking the other path. but we'll do it again in reverse to see where we went wrong. Otherwise, it was a beautiful walk with some stunning views

We enjoyed a magnificent tour in the sunshine. It is a little technical around the sharp limestone pavements and has a few good climbs, but it is very beautiful at this time of year, especially the flora, and, as promised in the description, there are lots of butterflies.
The local specialities, ravioli, caillette and cheeses, including the famous Bleu du Vercors, are worth a visit to Autrans, where you will find one of the best cheese shops and many trails for all levels.

Hello danieldupeage,
Thank you for your comment on this hike. Choosing the direction of a hike is often tricky. I have specific criteria, and for this hike, the part you describe is difficult to find. However, the return route is very easy to find because we have the Molière cliffs in our sights. This feature was decisive in choosing the direction.

Hello,

On 14 August, I did the tour of the clapiers, a very varied hike with lots of flora and fauna, pleasant trails, sharp limestone pavements and karstic caves. The weather was mixed but there were still some beautiful views when the clouds cleared.
I did it in the opposite direction, descending via La Croisette and ascending via Sornin. At the beginning, after the orientation table, on the plateau, take note of the small cairns that mark the trail to the forest. I found this route easier and more enjoyable.
The cows are all friendly and very photogenic!
Tip: finish off with a quick coffee at the Gîte des Feneys. The owner is welcoming and the small room with a stove is very welcome when it's 10° outside.

Yes, this year, the access road was covered in snow for much longer than usual! Reschedule this hike now. What's more, before the end of June, carpets of flowers decorate this route. And in autumn, it's the vines that abound!

The start of the hike was inaccessible in early May: the road was closed! We'll have to come back later, but the place is beautiful!

A magnificent walk all the way down. The stunning views make you forget how hard it was to climb back up!

andré,
Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the hike. Having done it mainly in late spring and summer, I didn't think it would be as pleasant in the first snows, so I'll do it again next autumn (for the porcini mushrooms, but which ones?).
