Description of the walk

The walk starts from the Tête de Chien car park at the end of Route de la Tête de Chien coming from La Turbie.

(S/E) Head south up Route de la Tête de Chien and pass through a barrier restricting access to pedestrians.

(1) Cross the road at marker 604 and take the path on the left, following the sign for "Tour de la Tête de Chien" (yellow markings). At the junction with a tarmac road, turn right and follow it for a few dozen metres, negotiating the bend. At the gate of the CNET Experimental Centre, take the path on the left (marker 603): magnificent view of Monaco and the coastline as far as Italy. Descend the fairly steep path, which winds around a few bends.

(2) Turn right, heading south, at marker 602. At the first bend, take the barely visible path on the right marked with a red cross to admire the climbing site in the Gentil sector, particularly "Big Ben", the enormous excavation in the cliff.

(3) Retrace your steps and continue south on the path.

(4) At marker 612, leave the main path and take a small path that climbs to the right.

(5) At the crossroads, take the path that descends to the left. At the next crossroads, turn right to follow a slightly marked but easy balcony path: magnificent view of the coastline.

(6) Turn right onto a short, slightly steep path that avoids having to go along the road. After a few metres, turn right again to rejoin the main path that runs alongside the Loubière climbing site.

(7) At marker 606, turn left towards Tête de Chien. Continue climbing to reach the fort's casemates and caves , then the viewpoint with its 180° panorama.

(8) From there, retrace your steps northwards to rejoin the road after passing through a small tunnel. Continue straight ahead.

(1) Stay on the road to retrace your steps and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike is not recommended in summer unless you set off very early: there is little shade and no water.
Good footwear is essential as the paths are stony and can be slippery.
Be aware that clouds often gather around the Tête de Chien peak (even in summer), resulting in fog, cold and humidity.
At point (4), I recommend leaving the main trail as it passes through an uninteresting residential area and then follows sections of road that are not very pleasant.
Wear long trousers as there are many thorny bushes between points (5) and (6).

Worth a visit

Nearby, you can visit the Roman ruins of the Trophy of Augustus, or Trophy of the Alps, in La Turbie.

It was a day of glorious sunshine for this lovely walk, which I always start from the church in Cap d'Ail, even though it only really gets interesting once you reach the Roman road.
For those arriving by car, it’s best to park in the small car park by the model-making route, at the top of the Roman road.

Note that between points (7) and (8), a sign indicates to turn left instead of continuing straight on via the usual route, which is spectacular and easy. I don’t recall seeing such a sign on my previous hikes.
Having read before setting off that the path was closed between markers 605 and 606 (AM department, updated 20/04/2026), I followed the signs, thinking that work must be underway near the large scree slope that needed to be crossed. Some hikers later told me that the path was not actually closed.

This alternative route involves a circular detour and means you have to rejoin the road at point (1) to reach the viewpoint (8), which offers a view that is as superb as ever, whether towards Monaco and Italy or towards Cap Ferrat and the Esterel.

Instead of heading to points 1-2-3 to descend towards Monaco (on a previous hike we hadn’t managed to find our way to point 6), I wanted to take the path I’d used the very first time to climb up to the Tête de Chien, improvising, as I often do, right from the start.
The start (signposted) begins on the left shortly after point (1). This is the alternative route taken on the ascent. You then need to take a narrow path on the right, which is barely visible due to the fairly dense vegetation. The path is no longer maintained, but remains perfectly passable. It runs behind the Barre de la Louvière. Its main advantage is that it is less exposed to direct sunlight. And it was very hot!

Thanks to those who provided the description of the walk. It’s an easy, short but interesting walk, as it offers a panoramic view of MONACO and gives a good sense of its layout; there are also some lovely views of the coast.
You should probably avoid doing the walk in summer because of the heat, and avoid the days after rain as some sections can be slippery.

A lovely walk, but very poorly signposted – two signs marked 612!!! Once you leave the yellow signs behind, it’s a bit of a gamble; you eventually get there after a few detours, but you do feel a bit lost. It was still very beautiful, though.

A very beautiful hike, but difficult to follow between points 4 and 6. The thorny vegetation and brambles are taking over the path, and there are no longer any markers. Trousers and sturdy shoes are essential.
The views of the coast and Monaco are magnificent. According to regular visitors to La Turbie, on a very clear day you can see Corsica from the Belvédère viewpoint, so keen hikers take note.

Hike in the hills above Monaco, with magnificent views of the coast. Between points 5 and 6, it is difficult to follow the route without the detailed Visorando map. Long trousers are also recommended to avoid the thorns ;-)

Thank you for sharing,
A magnificent hike with unique views of Monaco.
I highly recommend it.
Be aware that it is not easy and the start of the pt4 climb is along a small, poorly cleared path, so be sure to be well equipped (shoes, trousers, etc.).

Breathtaking views throughout the route.
Up to point (4) in the description, the yellow markings are very clear. But from there until point (7) on the main path, we hesitated several times to find the path, which was often hidden by vegetation and the area is rather vertiginous...
We recommend wearing trousers to protect yourself from thorns on part of the route!

A beautiful route with magnificent views of Monaco and the surrounding area. Be sure to take the path that winds through the hillside to avoid the road, but it can be quite steep in places.
