From Laghet to Peillon

A pleasant hike with little elevation gain. The starting route crosses numerous terraced olive groves. The Visorando GPS app may be useful as this route sometimes takes unmapped trails. A visit to the village of Peillon and the Laghet sanctuary will give this hike an unusual flavour.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Laghet.

(S/E) Go under the road bridge and, immediately afterwards, take the ramp on the left. At the entrance to the sanctuary, turn right onto the Spraës road with caution, heading towards the Plateau Tercier.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin des Écoles, rejoin the Spraës road and continue in the same direction.

(2) At the unnumbered signpost, turn right towards Plateau Tercier. Climb a steep, winding road to reach the hamlet of Spraës.

(3) Take the staircase on the right between the houses and climb up to the tarmac road of La Vigne.

(4) At the unnumbered marker, turn left and then stay on the path on the right, which climbs through olive groves. About 50 metres further on, turn right: be careful, as there are several paths and tracks leading to the olive groves. Use the app if necessary. When you reach a fork, turn left.

(5) Turn right and after about 50 metres, turn right again onto a long, pleasant, relatively flat path with views of Mont Agel. At the road, continue carefully along this tarmac road until you reach the crossroads.

(6) Leave the road and turn left onto the uphill path. At the next crossroads, turn right onto the flat path that crosses the scrubland and then descends through the woods into a ravine.

(7) Turn left and continue along the stony path that runs alongside the Ravin de Saint-Martin, then veering off to the right.

(8) At marker 584, continue towards Peillon. The path crosses an old stone bridge. Continue towards Peillon at marker 585. At the entrance to the village, turn left into an alleyway with passages under the houses. At the communal oven, climb the stairs to the village church and a small square.

(9) Enjoy the view, then turn right onto Carriera Centrala and leave the medieval village. At the war memorial, descend to the left onto the cement path, which quickly becomes stony. Come out onto the D121 at marker 587 and follow it carefully, going straight ahead to marker 588.

(10) Turn left, following the sign for "Peillon par le Pueï". At the next crossroads, at marker 592, turn right towards Sainte-Thècle and arrive at the hamlet of Le Pueï at marker 591.

(11) Continue along the uphill road to Les Preisses, pass the hamlet and you will reach a crossroads. Turn left, go through the barrier and continue for about 20 metres.

(12) Turn left: there is a cairn at the start of the beautiful 16th-century paved slanting street. Further up, you will rejoin the Route des Preysses.

(13) Turn left onto this road and continue carefully without taking any shortcuts to reach the barrier: the Ravin de la Lare is reserved for shooting sports.

(14) Just after the barrier, turn right onto the track. At the first crossroads (cairn), turn right and you will reach a junction of paths, where you will join the GR®51: marker 624 has disappeared.

(15) Continue straight ahead through the woods on an unmarked trail: the app may come in handy.

(16) At the trail junction, turn left to follow a wooded trail running alongside a wall. At the next trail junction, turn right onto the trail that descends. Cross the Soanès carriage road and continue straight ahead.

(17) At the wire fence, turn left. The path continues along a steeply descending tarmac road.

(18) At the crossroads, turn left and continue along the tarmac road to Camp Bollin, which turns into a dirt track in the wooded area.

(19) At this bend in the path, go straight ahead and not to the left: private property. Cross a small wetland area, walk along a centuries-old bridge and continue on the path leading to the southern part of the sanctuary, and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Danger on the ground: iron rods between (9) and (10). These used to hold wooden planks in place to form steps, but now they protrude from the planks or, worse still, are left standing alone in the middle of the path.

Walking sticks and hiking boots are recommended.

Water point and toilets at the start, and water point in the hamlet of Spraës (3).

The Visorando GPS app may be useful on certain sections.

Worth a visit

In the Laghet sanctuary, 6,000 ex-votos constitute one of the largest collections in France, the oldest dating back to 1792.

The village of Peillon is one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in France.

Hello Bernard,
Thank you for suggesting this hike. In my opinion, you absolutely need the Visorando app to do it in good conditions. It's true that there's quite a bit of road on the way back, but it's not too much of a problem because it's not very busy. One thing to note is the problem with the iron rods between points 9 and 10.
These rods used to hold wooden planks in place to form steps, but now they either stick out from the planks or, worse, are left lying in the middle of the path, which I think is quite dangerous.
If I may, Bernard, I think this should be mentioned in the description.
Thank you again for this route, which allows visitors to discover the beautiful village of PEILLON (unfortunately the church was closed) and the Laghet sanctuary, and of course the lovely paths along the route.

Best regards

Jean-Louis

Hello Bernard
Thank you for your reply and for pointing out the problem with the scrap metal. I forgot to wish you and your loved ones a happy new year.

Best regards, Jean-Louis

Hello Jean-Louis, thank you very much for these comments.
I have included "Danger on the ground: iron rods between points 9 and 10. At the time, these held wooden planks in place to form steps, but now they protrude from the planks or, worse still, are left standing alone in the middle of the path
as recommended.
Sorry for the "road" return, there is no alternative in this area.
Thanks again, best wishes for your walks.
Best regards, Bernard

I had a hard time finding my way through the olive grove, despite the app (luckily I had it)!
There's quite a bit of tarmac on the way back.
Still, it's a lovely walk.

Tastes and colours, to each their own.
Not liking the ancestral village of Peillon, why not?
Not liking Laghet, why not?
Not liking the ancient paths... why not?

I suggest that every hiker read the entire description so that they know what to expect.
Best regards, b.

A hike that is often done on asphalt, with very poorly maintained trails. We had to retrace our steps several times to find the path.
Avoid doing this in hot weather as there is very little shade.

The app is very useful as there is little or no tracking
Superb views
600m descent on the return journey on tarmac, which was tough, but overall very satisfied with this trip
Thank you

Hello,
The group I was leading really enjoyed this route, particularly the arrival in Peillon via the mule track and the visit to the village, which is well known by name but little seen.
For those who want to avoid going off-trail after point 15, take the wide path on the left instead of going straight ahead, then after 250 metres, take the wide path on the right (paths listed on OpenStreetMap randonnée monde).
In general, don't forget your GPX file to find/choose the right path at the numerous crossroads.
Best regards.

When you love someone, you don't count the cost

Joking aside, all in all, a good "600m" indeed
Looking forward to seeing you again on the trail,
Best regards, B.
