A beautiful hike where you will discover the Saint-qui-Sue cave, the Itsuchi cliffs with vultures and goats, and the abandoned village.

Description of the walk

Access by car: take the D918 road towards Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. At Bidarray, turn right onto the Pont Noblia bridge which crosses the Nive river. After the bridge, turn right. Cross a second bridge and continue, ignoring the road that branches off to the right towards Pas de Roland. Further on, at a three-way junction, do not take the road on the left that goes up to a farm selling cheese, but continue straight ahead. After a few kilometres of winding road, the road ends at the Arouchia farm, where you should park about a hundred metres before it, without obstructing the passage.

(S/E) Take theGR®10before the farm. It is clearly marked at the entrance to a path that climbs up a staircase. It's already quite a climb. After about 15 minutes, you will find a handrail that climbs to the right to the Grotte-du-Saint-qui-Sue (Harpékosaïndoa Cave), a place of pilgrimage for over 3,000 years. The stalagmite believed to represent this saint is at the very back of the cave.

(1) Continue along the path, which becomes very uneven from this point onwards. Crossing various scree slopes does not make things any easier. Reach the French-Spanish border.

(2) Leave theGR®10and take the path on the left that goes around Pagamendi and leads to the Penas d'Itsuchi cliff at Martikoenea.

(3) Follow the path that runs along the vulture cliffs to the crossroads above Lartezarreko Borda.

(4) Leave the path and turn right towards the west onto a faint track through the ferns, which climbs gradually and then joins a path that descends and leads to theGR®10at the Iguzkiegi border pass.

(5) Do not follow theGR®10but take the path on the left that leads under the Col des Veaux and onto the track that descends to Lesetakoborda. Do not descend, continue to the junction signposted Venta Burkaitz.

(6) Head towards the car park and take the path. Turn right immediately and descend along a path through an oak forest, crossing small streams. Follow the yellow markings. You will then arrive at the Aritzacun river. Follow it to reach the abandoned village of Borda.

(7) Continue for about 200 metres and turn left onto a small bridge that leads to the Bastan track. Turn left and follow the track. You will come to a crossroads with a new track.

(8) Continue straight ahead. Leave the track leading to Lesetakoborda on your left. Continue along the track. Admire the Penas d'Itchusi and the vultures that were circling in large numbers this afternoon. You will reach a new crossroads at the confluence of the Erreka and Ariztacun rivers at the Berekoetchéa lodge.

(9) Take the track again and follow the right bank of the Erreka. You will reach the confluence with the Urritzateko.

(10) Leave the track, turn left and descend via a small path towards a mill. Cross the Aritzacun via a recent footbridge and climb up a small path in the forest. Join a path that leads to a farm. Take the signposted path that goes around it and return to the road and the car park (S/E).

Notes

The start of the hike on theGR®10is quite difficult and reserved for experienced walkers. There is no drinking water along the entire route.
At the Saint-qui-Sue cave, it is a good idea to have a torch to light up the "character".
You can quench your thirst and eat at Venta Burkaitz after walking for almost 3½ hours.
I was greatly inspired by a hike suggested by Jacques Bomassi, whom I would like to thank.

Worth a visit

Things to see during the hike:
- The vultures (this was the time of year when the vultures were beginning to incubate their eggs).
- Goats (we met a shepherd who told us that he was the last person to put goats on the Penas d'Itchusi and that the goats we see on the rocks are goats that have returned to the wild).
(7) In the abandoned village of Borda, note the school's pediment and the lime kiln.

We attempted the hike on 14 August 2025. It was impossible to park near the start of the hike. There is a 5 km stretch of narrow road from Bidarray with no parking, and the farm is private property.
We had to give up and climbed Iparla from the Bidarray car park instead
The hike is probably superb, but you'll need to find another starting point.

This walk is magnificent. From the climb to the descent, but above all the extraordinary landscapes. Shady spots for the little ones after two hours of walking (small café and gingerbread) and when we reach the edge of the bastan, magnificent places to picnic. In short, a day of happiness! Life is beautiful!

thefirst part of the circuit is very interesting because of the view of the vulture cliffs.
The second part is less interesting as it is under the woods and there are no views

Parish specific to Brittany, very beautiful, varied hike. The climb is a bit challenging, but the descent is easy and shaded. Lots of pretty goats, only two vultures on the rock.
To start the hike, you have to park right at the end of the road, quite close to the farm, as parking is difficult and prohibited along the entire length of the road before that.

Very sunny weather, warm temperatures. Not much shade!
Lots of vultures. A few goats and sheep. Beautiful pottocks!
the climb up the GR 10 from Achouria farm (1½ hours) is tough!
The yellow markings are not always very visible!
The descent via the venta is very pleasant (in the shade) but requires caution: the path is narrow and there are streams to cross (slippery stones).

everything is perfect except that in Spain there are no signposts, and also the abandoned village is a bit monotonous on this white path, fortunately in the shade. I find that the detour to the farm is a bit long compared to three years ago. Alain

I am used to hiking in the area as I am from the local area.
This is the kind of hike best done in autumn because of the colours and exceptional light, even in winter.
For the more experienced, it is possible to start from Gakoeta, pass through Zelaiburu, descend to Beherekoetxea, climb back up to the penas via the monks' path and descend via Zarkanbide: a 1,000-metre elevation gain and a rollercoaster route.
One of the most beautiful hikes in the Basque Country.

Difficult hike, few or no signs, 14 km and 700 metres of elevation gain. The end is difficult because the trail used to pass through farmland, but access is now prohibited. You have to return to Bidarray on the right-hand side (you can't miss it), then arrive at the village and walk back up a few kilometres to return to the starting point.

An excellent hike, with superb views, very varied landscapes along the route (mountains, forest) and wildlife.

Be sure to use the Visio Rando GPS map carefully, as the information is too vague in several places... (particularly at point 2, where it says to reach the French-Spanish border, but there is no indication of where the border is, so if in doubt, you may be tempted to climb to the top...).

Enjoy!

One of the most beautiful hikes we've ever done.

Difficult, um... yes! Especially the first part, so get your calves ready.
The first part can be very slippery in wet weather, so be careful!

Be sure to bring a detailed map or, failing that, a GPS track (free with the app and viewable even without a network connection) as some sections lack landmarks:
- at the start, the names of the farms are not indicated; you will see the first building (the farm on the way back), continue along the road and after the bend at the bottom you will see the second farm (Arouchia) and a little before the start.
- "Reach the Spanish border" (no landmarks) point 2
- "Leave the path... a faint trail through the ferns" (no landmarks and the trail in question now resembles a highway for Pottoks and goats) point 4
- "Leave the track, turn left... towards a mill" (no landmark, the mill is not visible from the path) point 10.

We got a bit stuck in places and are glad we cached the hike to get us out of trouble.

In any case, thank you for this route, which we definitely plan to do again.

An excellent hike. First, discovering Harpeko Saindua (the cave of the Sweating Saint), immortalised by Daniel Mermet's memorable radio programme "Là-bas s'y j'y suis" on France Inter in the 1990s. Then we saw the magnificent cliffs, which looked like something out of a Western (if it weren't so green!) and watched the vultures circling overhead. Arriving at the venta (located in Arizkun in Baztan, according to the tavern owner) for a refreshing drink felt amazing. You can eat there, but be sure to eat light, as there are still quite a few kilometres to go! The descent to the abandoned village in the shade of the oak trees is very pleasant, as is the detour through the village itself. However, the condition of the houses, the tomatoes in the gardens and the houses that are inhabited in August suggest that this village is said to be abandoned mainly for publicity purposes. The return to the trail (be careful to descend towards the mill, as the path is not very visible) is a little monotonous, but from the venta onwards, almost the entire route is in the shade, which we appreciated in the intense heat of this Thursday. And on arrival, the cold drinks at the Arouchia farm are worth their weight in gold. This is also where we met some very friendly hikers from Tyrosse whom we had seen at the start and who arrived at the same time as us after climbing to the summit of Iguzkimendi via the smugglers' path and returning via the GR 10, which we had taken at the start. Definitely worth doing again.

3/4 of the circuit is excellent. The vulture cliffs are truly beautiful and interesting because there are many vultures quite close by.
(One small downside is the quarter of the route that follows the track leading to the Rolland Pass, which is less interesting).
Very happy nonetheless, we'll do it again...

Hello,

The hike itself is interesting and beautiful to discover... but on the second part, there is a lack of signposting that could help beginner hikers to make the hike easier... I met and helped some people to find their way...
This isn't the first time, but on the Spanish side, this lack of signposting is very common...
Thank you, Visorando, for your expertise.
See you soon
André

A very beautiful hike, with stunning views from the start to the abandoned village of Borda. After that, the wide track to the mill is not particularly interesting and rather monotonous. The undergrowth is very pleasant, especially when it's hot.
I can confirm what Benji7 said about the detour around the farm; there is a sign to show you the way.
I didn't find it difficult, except for a few sections (scree, rocky) which can be slippery, and some sections where you need to be careful if you're afraid of heights.
Good footwear is essential (high-top boots if possible for the more difficult sections, scree and rocky paths)
Be careful if it's hot, bring plenty of water as three-quarters of the hike is in the open.

The hike is a walk, not a race
