Description of the walk

Start from the car park of the village hall, located at the northern exit of the village of Fontaines.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, head towards the village of Fontaines. You’ll soon reach a four-way junction; take the pavement on the right. Turn right towards Mézilles. Walk for about a hundred metres, then turn right towards Les Berthelots.

(1) Head to the right. The tarmac ends shortly afterwards and, after the entrance leading to a timber storage area, a track begins. Follow it northwards until you reach a service road. Take it on the right, then leave it shortly afterwards by turning left. After a slight bend in the road, look out for an entrance on the right under a coppice.

(2) Turn into this entrance through the woodland and stay on the main track, which ends at a main road.

(3) Turn right, ignoring the first track leading to a few houses. Continue downhill until you reach a side road just before a property. Take this road by turning right and you’ll come out onto the D955.

(4) Cross with great care and continue along the left-hand verge until you reach the nearby junction signposted ‘Les Carreaux’. Follow this direction until you reach the Y-junction formed by the streets at the entrance to the hamlet. Keep to the right and go down this small road, leaving Les Bezots on your right, then crossing the Ru des Vernes. You will arrive at the edge of the Bois de la Ravière.

(5) Turn right onto the path which initially runs alongside a meadow on your right before quickly heading into the woodland.

(6) At the edge of the woodland, do not continue straight on through the woodland, but turn right onto the path, which is not very obvious at the very start. Leave this sunken path, which runs in a straight line, and head off to the right to reach Bas-Jaffot.

(7) Turn left at the house without crossing onto the service road. Carry on straight ahead, reach the Château du Thabor and continue straight on, ignoring the paths on the right. When you reach the entrance to Fontaines, turn right, walk up the street to return to the junction where you started. There, turn right and immediately cross the main road at the pedestrian crossing. Turn right and stay on the pavement on the left, heading towards the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

There is a picnic area at the Impluvium washhouse. To get there, just as you enter the village from the Chemin du Thabor, turn left twice in succession and you’ll find it 200 metres on. It is covered and offers shelter from both rain and sun.
Visits to Toucy and Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye are possible.

A path often used, yes, by hunters...
A very muddy track at this time of year. Between points 1 and 2, it’s completely rutted by timber lorries: not pleasant at all.
