From the cobbled streets of Toucy to the pollarded trees of the Bois des Quatre Francs

Marked trail No. 17
A trail that smells of trogne trees. This tree, emblematic of field edges and woods, which for years has fed animals and heated homes in the Poyaudine region, can be found in countless numbers along this trail.
On both the outward and return journeys, you will enjoy a wonderful discovery of the streets and alleys of Old Toucy.

Description of the walk

The car park for departure and return is located in the centre of Toucy, Place des Frères Genêt.

(S/E) Go to Rue Émile Genêt, cross this street at the pharmacy, turn right and walk up this street. Before the big bend in Rue Paul Bert, turn left onto Rue du Miton. At the end, turn left onto Rue Lucile Cormier.
Walk past the town hall, then the front of a pharmacy to reach Rue Paul Defrance. Cross over and take Rue des Montagnes (towards Lycée Pierre Larousse).

At the three-way junction, leave the car park and the street on your right and continue uphill. Walk past the school and continue along this road until you reach the junction with Avenue de Kusel.

(2) Cross this avenue and find the entrance to a small lane between two houses called Chemin d'Arthé. Continue along this lane, which quickly turns into a sunken path. You will pass a few side paths and field entrances, but these are short. At the crossroads, go straight ahead.

(3) At the road, turn left and walk for about 100 metres. Turn onto the path on the right. A long row of pollarded trees (also known as trognes or écornues) will guide you to the Maurepas ford. After crossing the ford, walk up alongside the fields. Halfway up the hill, leave the path on the right.

(4) At the castle on the right, take the road on the left. At Maurepas, continue straight ahead to join the D955.

(5) Cross carefully and take a small path. It quickly splits into two branches. Take the left-hand branch. Continue along this path, which is better marked and wider than the side paths.

(6) Cross the street in the hamlet of Maumont and immediately turn right onto a path under the trees. At the next crossroads, turn left. Shortly after crossing the Maurepas stream (much larger than the first crossing), take the path on the right. Leave the farm buildings on your right and continue straight ahead.

(7) Turn left (the path is not shown on the IGN map). Still on the sunken path, you will come to a crossroads. Turn right, walking alongside the fields in places.

(8) When you reach a wider road flanked by a road marker, turn left. This path is busier.

(9) At the end of the farm shed, turn left at the hairpin bend and follow the path under the shade of the fields on your right and some wooded moorland.

(10) Go straight ahead at this crossroads. Continue heading south-east. At the crossroads with the road to La Roche, continue down the tarmac road.

(11) Continue straight ahead. You will come to a crossroads opposite some agricultural machinery buildings. Turn right into the avenue of plane trees.

(12) Cross the Californie facilities located on either side (see explanations in §). Walk past the grocery store and petrol station on your right. At the end, turn left onto Rue de la Chatterie. Leave Rue des 6 Deniers.

(13) Cross Avenue Aristide Briand with caution and go up the street opposite. At the road sign, turn right. In front of the church tower, go up the alley on the right that goes around the church.

(14) At the entrance stairs to this building, go down the street on the right. At the end, turn right into a small square. Go through the breach in the old ramparts and go down the flight of steps which, after offering a beautiful view of Place Pierre Larousse, lead to this space and in front of the statue of the local child. Walk for a moment along Rue Paul Bert and take the lane on the right to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Toucy is an important centre in Puisaye and also a historic town. Take the time to visit the town and its ramparts.
It also has a market, ranked among the most beautiful in France.
At (2), about 200 metres on the right, is the Pyramide du Loup.
At (4), another marked path branches off to the right, offering other viewpoints.
At (12), La Californie is a place dedicated to social cohesion and the circular economy. A recycling centre, a second-hand clothes shop, mutual aid workshops and occasional events bring this space to life.

This hike takes place mainly in the woods, making it perfect for those who want to go for a walk in the summer. We know Toucy well, so we didn't do the village section. To do this, simply leave your car at the football stadium.
Along the way, you will enjoy pretty landscapes, pretty woodland and pretty houses and hamlets.
The route is very walkable. There is one slightly tricky section (fallen trees) but it is easily navigated.

A lovely hike done as a group.
No issues with signposting.
Best done in dry weather.
Picturesque section of the trail between the pollarded trees in the Quatre Francs woods (between points 3 and 4).
A few trees across the path between points 7 and 8 (before the recent storm).
At point 10, at the intersection, the signpost is broken.

A very pleasant route starting from Toucy, which allows you to learn a little more about the paths around this town. The Chemin d'Arthée is magnificent before arriving at the castle. The return route is also very pleasant as it overlooks the village of Champeaux. This trail can be done in any season, but is best enjoyed in dry weather as some sections are very difficult to navigate in rainy conditions.

I loved this route; best enjoyed when it's very hot as it's always in the shade. Really very pleasant.
