The Agate Trail revisited

Starting from the Moulin de Lafargue (in the commune of Montredon-Labessonnié), we offer a completely revamped circular route based on the original Agate Trail, which is much longer and starts from the village. This circular route presents no particular difficulties for hikers accustomed to similar distances. At the end of the route, there is a steep climb with a 17% gradient. Enjoy your hike and take in the lovely views of the green pastures, the Lacaune hills and, weather permitting, the Pyrenees mountain range visible in the distance!

Description of the walk

The route starts from the Moulin de Lafargue: you can park in a small grassy area in front of the millstones of the old mill.

No signposting

(S/E) Head towards the stream, cross the bridge, walk for about 200 m and leave the tarmac road to take a dirt track on the left, flanked by a hedge on either side. The track climbs. Walk for about 800 m and look for the first yellow marker on a tree at the very top of the track.

Yellow PR® signpost

(1) Turn left. Continue to the next junction and turn right. Follow the path as it winds through the fields for about 400 m until you reach a fork.

Red and white GR® markings + yellow PR® markings

(2) Turn right, following these dual markings, and pass between two fenced-off plots with 2-metre-high fences: a few kilometres further on, you’ll see the Météo France weather station on your left.

(3) Turn right again and join a tarmac road: the hamlet of Peyre Blanque is on the right.

(4) Continue straight ahead. A little further on, pass the farm buildings at Neuilly on your left. A few dozen metres further on, you’ll reach the junction with the D59.

(5) Cross the road and continue straight on, following the tarmac road and the sign for “Point de vue de Lagriffoul”. Walk for another kilometre or so; the tarmac road turns into a dirt track and leads into the pine plantations. Continue for another kilometre until you reach the bench on your left , where you can admire a superb panorama: in the foreground, the vast pastures of Montredon; in the middle ground, Saint-Jean Church and the village of Montredon-Labessonnié; and in the background, the Montagne Noire and, depending on the season, sometimes even the magical sight of the snow-capped Pyrenees.

(6) Begin the descent towards the Croix du Capello. Continue straight on at the junction and walk for about 350 m.

No signposting

(7) TheGR® branches off to the right: stop following this signposting and keep to the left. Go straight on to the Croix du Capello. Pass in front of this cross, turning right to join the tarmac road.

Yellow PR® signposting

Follow it to the right for a good hundred metres.

(8) A wooden sign reading "Sentier des agates" points to a dirt forest track to take down below on the right. Walk for 1 km (through recently cleared areas) until you reach a three-way junction.

(9) Take the old path leading down to the left (there is a “private road” sign for the one on the right) towards the ruins of Bayssas. At the hairpin bend shortly afterwards, turn right: there is a very faint yellow mark on a tree, followed 20 m further on by a second yellow mark. Continue along this path. At the hamlet of La Mouline (on your left), a tree is lying across the path: continue to follow the yellow markings.

(10) At the junction, head left then right to join another track (the yellow markings are on an electricity pylon).

GR® red and white markings

(11) Follow the sign for the “Sentier des agates”, turn left towards the hamlet of L’Hom Haut.

(12) At the small bridge, look out for the old Moulin de l’Hom, a small stone house gradually disappearing beneath the ivy. Turn left then right and leave the GR®.

PR® yellowmarkings + red mountain bike markers

A long climb lies ahead.

Red mountain bike markings

(13) Turn right and, 200 m further on, reach a rocky outcrop with a magnificent view over the Riou de l’Aze valley and the hamlets of Laval and Salclas.

(14) Continue along the path, reach a junction and turn left.

YellowPR® signposting

(15) Turn right twice to follow a path that descends through fields and leads to the D59.

(16) Cross the road and take the path opposite. Return to the hamlet of Lafargue, turn right to reach the mill and the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Lagriffoul viewpoint (view of the village and, in the background, the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees, when the Autan wind blows).
This hike takes its name from the agates of Montredon-Labessonnié, which are renowned among collectors; you can find them after Lhom as you climb the ridge overlooking the Canalou Gorges
Take a look at the ruins of Le Bayssas, a hamlet that was inhabited until the 1950s.

The rocky promontory is a lovely surprise and the ridge path that follows is very pleasant. If the forestry work had been done more carefully, the section through the woods would be more enjoyable. It's a shame.
I agree with Aigle noir: parking is not easy.
Still, it's a good hike with beautiful views. GPS is useful.

Beautiful hike with lovely views of the countryside, villages and Pyrenees. GPS tracking is essential as some signs and markers have disappeared. Parking is difficult in the small hamlet where the hike starts as spaces are limited.

An interesting hike if you enjoy forest trails, as a large part of it is in the forest.
The climb after the mill is very pleasant with a beautiful viewpoint near the rocks (be careful ⚠️ not to slip).

A lovely route offering stunning views of the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees in fine weather.
A route through varied woodland (deciduous, coniferous, holly) and meadows, with plenty of shade.
No difficulty; the climbs are through the undergrowth, on forest tracks or narrow paths.
The paths are passable, though sometimes stony, and still a bit damp at this time of year, but the puddles can be easily avoided.
Forestry work has slightly damaged some tracks and a few small trees have fallen across the paths, but nothing insurmountable.
Very little tarmac and on small, very quiet roads (didn’t see a single motor vehicle over the 14 km).
Worth doing
