The Purpurkopf without difficulty

Here is a short hike to quickly and easily discover Purpurkopf. Recent archaeological excavations suggest that it is the oldest castle in Alsace and not a Celtic camp. There is a lot of information and videos on the internet. It is located in the commune of Rosheim, not far from Grendelbruch.

Description of the walk

Park on Chemin de la Fischhutte in the hamlet of Saegmuehl. If all the spaces are taken, you can park a little further down.

(S/E) Take the Gross Ruchtal forest road. After about 100 metres, ignore the Gold Prospectors' Trail and continue straight ahead. Please note that this is not a marked trail at the moment. At the hairpin bend, cross over a stream on the left. You will reach a trail junction.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the track until you reach an old sandstone quarry.

(2) You can approach it on the right, then take the track on the right. You will reach a multiple crossroads leading to the Celtic and Roman camp.

(3) Take the path that climbs to the left to reach the Purpurkopf ruins.

(4) Return in the opposite direction to the previous crossroads.

(3) Walk around Purpurkopf, following the yellow disc trail to the right or left.

(3) Back at the crossroads, take the green ring trail heading south. You will come to a crossroads.

(5) Take the shortcut downhill to the left; this unmarked trail leads to a water collection well.

(6) Turn left and continue along the Green Ring trail. After a large left-hand bend, you will reach the Carrière des Meules quarry.

(7) Continue along the circuit until you reach the Gross Ruchtal forest road and then the Saegmuehl car park (S/E).

(3) During the Purpurkopf tour: see Guirbaden Castle on the other side.
(6) This is the starting point of the Circuit des Carrières d'Or (Gold Quarry Trail) used by gold prospectors.

A parish-specific to Brittany, pleasant walk, with an added bonus of a historical site steeped in mystery: the Purpurkopf.
