Description of the walk

Car park at Saegmuehl, reached via a small tarmac road from the Fischhütte.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the Gross Ruchtal road (Green Ring and Blue Cross markings) on the left, which climbs towards the Purpurkopf.

(1) Follow the path climbing to the right (marked with a Green Ring) which leads onto the Magelrain Forest Road.

(2) Take the hairpin bend to the right on this forest road, cross the Grand Ruchtal stream and reach the edge of the forest.

(3) You’ll come out onto an open stretch with a superb panoramic view of the village of Grendelbruch and continue along the same forest road, which forms a circular route.

(4) Leave the forest road and take the path (marked with a Blue Saltire signpost) which branches off to the left. Cross a forest road and head for the Col du Jaegertaennel (approximately 1.7 km uphill). There is a table and benches at the pass.

(5) At the pass, follow the path leading off to the left which goes round the Schwarzkopf. Cross the Chemin du Grand Hêtre and arrive at a fork at elevation 634.

(6) Turn left at the hairpin bend and continue north-east to reach the Hoderbusch Pass. There is a table and benches at the pass.

(7) From the pass, follow the path on the left (Green Ring markings) which goes round the Fackenkopf and then the Purpurkopfen, descending into the valley. Cross a stream via a footbridge and rejoin the outbound route. Turn right to reach the car park at Saegmuehl (S/E).

Hello everyone,
I wholeheartedly agree with Thecla’s view.
Having walked this path many times, in every season and under every sky, I believe that the beauty of a route lies less in the spectacle it offers than in the state of mind with which one approaches it.
For me, every hike is magnificent and holds its own truth, regardless of the weather or the time of year. The sweeping panoramas and castles are certainly a feast for the eyes, but the simplicity of a forest track offers a silence and a simplicity that allow us to reconnect with what truly matters.
Each season reinvents the scenery for those who know how to look beyond appearances. I wish us all, whatever our expectations, beautiful connections with nature and beautiful inner journeys! 🌲✨

I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the hike. What makes a hike enjoyable is different for everyone. Personally, just being out in nature, listening to the birds singing, and so on, is enough to make me happy. I don’t always need trails, viewpoints, castles, or other sights to see. Perhaps you’ll find something you enjoy next time 😊

The description made me want to go on this hike, but I was disappointed by how monotonous the paths were – lots of uninspiring forest tracks and very few views; it was rather boring...

A lovely walk through the vast and beautiful Rosheim Forest. There are a few lovely viewpoints along the route, which presents no particular difficulties. We met very few people on the well-marked trails!

A hike suitable for everyone. A steady climb along a wide forest track to a lovely view over Grendelbruche (3). Turn off onto a narrow path (4) leading to the Col du Jaegertaennel. Then a loooong, rather uninteresting descent to point (7), before finishing the return journey to the car park along a very pleasant path through the forest. I didn’t meet a single person during the 4-hour hike

This route is particularly appealing for those who enjoy walking in a quiet, peaceful setting that is clearly not very busy (we only came across eight people on 1 May). It’s well worth making the round trip to the summit of the Purpurkopf, where the ruins of the ‘oldest castle in Alsace’ still stand. The highlight is the detailed information boards.
