Grendelbruch and Breitsteige Rocks

This hike takes you past the Grendelbruch Rock and the Breitsteige Rocks. Unfortunately, the latter are increasingly hidden by vegetation. There are other rocks that are more easily accessible: see § Practical information. In the description, however, I will indicate a way to avoid the most difficult parts.

Description of the walk

Park at Grendelbruch, in the Guirbaden district, nearthe Gai SéjourMedical Education Institute. This is also the starting point for hikes to Guirbaden Castle.

(S/E) Head in the opposite direction from the village, towards Guirbaden. Before the barrier, turn left onto the steep path marked with a yellow disc. Climb up, ignoring any farm tracks you come across, until you reach the Grendelbruch Rock.

(1) You can continue to the spot marked "belle vue à 3 min." (beautiful view 3 mins away), which unfortunately no longer lives up to its name due to the vegetation. From there, the path is no longer marked, so turn back if you don't want to go any further. Otherwise, follow the path that runs along the rocks before entering the forest. This path is narrow and not always easy to follow as it becomes a little more overgrown, partly due to fallen trees. The use of GPS is recommended to ensure you are heading in the right direction. When you reach a forest road, continue slightly uphill to the right and pass a hunting hide.

(2) At this point, continue straight ahead, uphill, to the highest point of the forest road: possible alternative route, see the Practical Information section.

(3) Turn right. The most difficult part begins. Try to follow the GPS track to go around the first rock on its left via a very steep descent. As indicated, this is not easy and you can always turn back. You will come to a second rock, then a third, heading west off the trail. The reward is the last rock, which is shaped like a cave. Only mushroom pickers would venture into this kind of difficult terrain. You will need to go around it, sometimes on all fours. At the top of this last rock, you will find the most beautiful view, with the village of Grendelbruch and the Hohbuhl in the background.

(4) Head north-northeast to find the forest track you took on the way there.

(2) Turn left. Leave the arrival path on your left and continue straight ahead. Ignore a path on the right and reach another intersection located a hundred metres further on, near a house.

(5) Keep going in the same direction and head straight downhill to reach a crossroads opposite the I.M.E. Turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Caution! Much of the route is through the forest on unmarked trails. There are difficult passages on steep and slippery slopes near the Breitsteige Rocks, which may be dangerous for some. In addition, you will frequently have to pass through bushes and other undergrowth. This walk is therefore strongly discouraged for people with no experience other than on marked trails.

(2) Alternative route if you want to avoid the most difficult part and just see one of the Breitsteige Rocks, the one shaped like a cave. In this case, turn right, completely off the trail, until you reach the rock, which is then just a matter of exploring. Then turn back to the forest track.
