Grendelbruch-Purpurkopf-Hoderbusch-Verlorene Eck-Col du Jaegertaennel.

This circular route on the slopes above the Magel Valley is mostly along paths and beautiful forest trails.
Views of Guirbaden Castle in the distance, the climb to Purpurkopf, a break at the Chalet-Abri du Verlorene Eck, small wooden bridges to cross small streams, and more beautiful views, particularly of the western side of Mont-Sainte-Odile, are the highlights of this very pleasant hike in all weathers.

Description of the walk

Parking is available near the church on Rue du Mont Sainte-Odile in Grendelbruch.

(S/E) Facing the war memorial, to the right of the church, turn right towards the "Coin de l'Église" and take the alleyway that descends towards the east and joins a street, then quickly turn right onto a downhill path (just before the house at No. 13 on this alleyway). It leads to the small Rue Gothey.

(1) Leave the return path on your right and follow the street to the left, cross the bridge over the Magel and continue to the junction with the D266.

(2) Walk a few metres to the right and cross carefully to climb the path marked with a green ring and yellow disc, which veers right towards Purpurkopf. Leave a path coming from the left and continue straight ahead for about 100 metres until you reach the crossroads.

(3) Turn left and follow the yellow disc and green ring markings. Ignore the cross paths, pass the Petit and Grand Ruchthal valleys and arrive at a multiple crossroads on a forest road.

(4) There are two options:
1) To avoid taking the same path down as you did up, take the path on the left and descend via the path on the right (or vice versa).
2) Option shown on the map: climb to the summit of Purpurkopf; a sign indicates a 5-minute detour to reach it, then retrace your steps to the forest road.

(4) At this spot by the roadside, there is a table and two benches, and 30 metres away, another table, this one covered, and two benches.
Continue south on the forest road. Leave the path on the left towards the springs and, after a left turn, join a forest path. Continue straight on to Hoderbusch.

(5) Bench and table for a break with a view of the Heidenkopf. Continue downhill southwards, following the yellow disc markings towards the Lauterbach valley. After a left turn, the path heads east and joins a crossroads.

(6) Turn right at an acute angle onto a path. Further down, cross the Winterhalde forest road and take the path downhill to the left (signposted Heidenkopf). Further on, cross the Lauterbach stream via a wooden footbridge and continue south, keeping to the right. The path joins the forest road and leads to the Verlorene Eck shelter.

(7) Continue south on theGR®531. After a left turn, veer right, then right again for a few dozen metres until you reach the junction with the Ochsenlaeger forest road.

(8) At a stele, a bench and a large fir tree, turn right onto the Chevalet Bleu marked path to the Col du Jaegertaennel, at a crossroads with a table and benches.

(9) Continue along the Chevalet Bleu marked trail downhill to the right. It crosses the Magelrain Forest Road, then heads north and joins the junction you came to on the way there.

(3) Turn left and you will arrive at the D66. Follow it carefully to the left for about 100 metres, then turn right to reach the Magel bridge.

(10) Cross the bridge and, before the right-hand bend, take the first street on the right, Rue Gothey, and return to the crossroads at the start of the circular route.

(1) Go up to the left along the path you took on the way there and return to the church and car park (S/E).

Notes

Excavations have been underway at the summit of Purpurkopf since the summer of 2022. They have uncovered what is believed to be one of the oldest castles in Alsace, dating from the Middle Ages (9th-11th century). It is thought to be the castle of an ancestor of Leo IX.

Walking sticks and good shoes are recommended.
There are no drinking water sources along the circular route. Ninety percent of the route is through forest.
This hike was completed and enjoyed by the Branquignols (a famous group of epicurean hikers from Alsace) on Wednesday 28 June 2023.

Worth a visit

The Mündel tower at the summit of the Heidenkopf (close to the route)
The Heidenkopf rises to 787 m and offers a view of part of the Alsace plain and the Black Forest and the surrounding peaks. The summit consists of a small plateau. Installing a tower provided a 360° view. It was built in 1909 by the Club Vosgien de Strasbourg. See Construction of the Club Vosgien de Strasbourgtowers.

The Verlorene Eck
Tucked away between the Heidenkopf (Head of the Pagans) and the Teufelsgebirge (Devil's Mountain) lies a unique place. The Verlorene Eck (Lost Corner) is one of those places steeped in mystery and legend, of which there are so many in the Northern Vosges. We are very close to the Porte de Pierre and the Jardin des Fées. (Source https://www.lieux-insolites.fr/basrhin/e...)

A pleasant route; we’d already done it in September 2023, but point S/E is still just as ‘tricky’ to figure out; we eventually found the marked path mentioned in point 2, but at the start there was neither a green ring nor a yellow disc, just a blue cross; the green ring is visible a few metres further on to the right; and the yellow disc appears a little further along the route
Excavations at the Purpurkopf site have made good progress since our last visit; congratulations to the volunteers
The Verlorene Eck is a very peaceful spot; there are options for picnicking in the shade or out in the open; the chalet located here is large and very pretty; there are also several benches and tables along the route
Fortunately, the map was a great help, as was the phone (GPS)

A very interesting and varied route.
A few difficulties in the description, which were well described in Zielinski's review.
Otherwise, a very beautiful walk.

A very beautiful route, taken after several days of heavy rain, resulting in a lot of mud in places.

Overall, a pleasant route. Mostly shaded, but there are some sunny sections. Note regarding point 2: there is indeed a path that climbs up opposite once you have crossed the D266, but at the start there is no green ring or yellow disc, only a blue cross.
Congratulations to the volunteers who have been working on the Purpurkopf for just over a year.
The "das verlorene Eck" site is very relaxing and has several picnic areas (covered or uncovered).
As for the section of the route marked with blue signs, you need to pay close attention as the signs are often painted on trees and therefore not very visible.

Forest route, including a visit to the Purpurkopf archaeological site, a lovely spot for a picnic at the Verlorene Eck chalet, and a look at the Ochsenlager forest house. The paths and trails are fairly easy.

Path without rocks, very pleasant in warm weather, with plenty of shade, vegetation and streams; few viewpoints and hardly any memorable ones. Places of interest: the ongoing archaeological exploration of Purpurkopf, the "megalithic display" at Verlorene Eck (https://www.lieux-insolites.fr/basrhin/e...) and the Ochsenlaeger Forest House.
However, there are a few hesitations or thoughts about the route; the description may need some adjustments and comments. I suggest:
Point (2): "the marked trail..." -> "The steep trail, visible opposite with a blue cross painted next to a green ring, leading to 'Green Ring and Yellow Disc'."
Point (4): Replace the paragraph with: "There are two options: 1) The circular trail, which can be taken on the right or left, bypassing the summit of Purpurkopf, where archaeological excavations are taking place - 2) The direct round trip to the summit of Purpurkopf (according to a sign, 5 minutes to reach it)."
Point (4): "On this space -> and two benches" Replace the paragraph with "For groups: There are several benches on this site."
Point (5): "with a view of the Heidenkopf" NOTE: We did not find any view of the Heidenkopf, whose tower we hoped to see. Should we have deviated from our route? To be clarified. On the other hand, there is a very nice CV sign with (finally!) a precise presentation of the Club's signage.
Point (6): "keeping to the right" NOTE: The IGN map shows a remarkable beech tree near the path that veers to the left. We did not see it, but Google ('Grendelbuch – Beech') shows an image of a tree that is certainly massive but particularly decayed... Worth exploring on the way back.
Point (7): Replace the paragraph with: "Continue south on the GR®531. In the large left-hand bend in the track, turn right onto an uphill path (blue rectangle). You will reach the tarmac of the Ochsenlaeger Forest Road, which you take to the right for about a hundred metres."
Point (8): "Chevalet Bleu" NOTE: Chevalet Bleu signage is quite rare and sometimes improvised (paint on the back of a road sign, etc.) on this section.
CAUTION: take the shortcut to the Col du Jaegertaennel on the left of the track, otherwise you will have to make a long, uninteresting hairpin turn.
In any case, our thanks go to the "Branquignols, Alsaciens épicurieux", authors of this overall pleasant route.
