Falkenstein, Hohbuhl, Col de la Franzur from Grendelbruch

From the mountain village of Grendelbruch, this loop, mainly located south of this village of 1,250 inhabitants, sets off to explore the Piton du Falkenstein, a magnificent rocky outcrop offering a beautiful view of the Bruche Valley. This hike continues via the Col du Bruchberg, the climb through the stubble fields to the Signal de Grendelbruch and its 360° view, then follows the climb to Hohbuhl through the forest. Next, pleasant trails take you to the Col du Beyerlager and then to the Col de la Franzur. You will make some magnificent discoveries, alternating between village streets, forest, undergrowth, thatched roofs, forest roads and pretty little trails. And there are plenty of viewpoints!

Description of the walk

Parking in front of the chapel and Square du Souvenir, to the right of the church.

(S/E) Go back up to the crossroads, cross the D204 and follow Rue de la Libération until you rejoin the D204 at the village exit. Cross it carefully and follow it to the right to find a path marked with a yellow rectangle a little further on the left.

(1) Follow this path, marked with a yellow rectangle, which leads to Piton du Falkenstein.

(2) At the bottom of Piton du Falkenstein, climb up the rocks on the right, where you will find a bench offering a remarkable view of the Bruche valley and the Donon and Rocher de Mutzig mountains. Please be careful, especially with children, as there are no guardrails. Go back down a few metres and continue to the right (south) on the path marked with a yellow, red and white rectangle (GR®532) until you reach the Route Forestière de Muckenbach, at the Col du Bruchberg (there is a table and benches in the shade under the trees a little further down).

(3) Cross the Route de Birley with caution and follow it to the right for a few metres. Then take the highest path on the left, marked with a yellow, red and white rectangle (GR®532), to Hohbuhl, the highest point of the Schelmeck (altitude 753).

(4) Hohbuhl or Shelmeck sign: beautiful stubble fields, an orientation table, tables and benches for a nice break. The view is superb, stretching towards the Donon, the Alsace plain and the Black Forest mountains. The magnificent stubble fields nearby were the scene of a violent battle during the First World War. Continue along the path, cross a carriage road, Chemin de Schirmeck, follow the unmarked path opposite, going uphill, and leave the first path on the left. Take the next one, which enters the forest and, a little further on, curves to the left to arrive at Hohbuhl (altitude 847 metres).

(5) Hohbuhl 847 m, follow the unmarked path opposite, slightly downhill, to reach the Carrefour du Birleyloejer (elevation 824, a bench at the crossroads).

(6) Head straight ahead (south) along the unmarked path, uphill, and go around the Petit Roskopf. The path downhill is barely visible due to the vegetation (in June 2025), but it is easily passable.

(7) At the large crossroads of several forest roads suitable for vehicles (there is a table and two benches where you can take a break), continue straight ahead, south, for about 60 metres.

(8) At the fork, turn left and continue for 50 metres to reach the Col de la Franzuhr (marked with a blue cross).

(9) Leave the path on your right and continue, passing a second path on your left, until you reach Chemin Neuenmatten, marked with a blue cross.

(10) Continue to the right (marked with a blue cross).

(11) Continue left (marked with a blue cross) until you reach Rue du Baschney.

(12) Continue right on Rue du Baschney, following the blue cross signs, and walk along the Ruisseau de Baschney on your left.

(13) There is a beautiful house on the left with a lovely park on the corner of the street. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead, taking the street on the right, Rue Gothey, and pass the fishing ponds.

(14) Go up the path on the left that leads to the "corner of the church", then tothe car park in front of the chapel (S/E).

I will divide the hike into two halves, separated by the Birleylaeger Pass.
First half 4.5/5. Wonderful, superb views, a perfect route.
4.5 because the route isn't 100% reliable 😉 but that's not a problem.

The second half is the blue cross path, and there the path is passable by vehicle. I liked it much less, it feels much less like hiking...
Especially since, about three-quarters of the way through, I lost the trail and had to make a detour to find it again further up.
It was still very pretty, but no more than 2.5/5.

Many thanks to the author of this hike, who put in a lot of work.

The hike starts by crossing the village for over a kilometre in full sun. There is no shade on the benches along the route. Between points 11 and 12, the blue cross is not visible. You need to cross a field to find the blue cross at the edge of the forest. The return journey is in the sun.
