Description of the walk

Park in one of the car parks at Pont de l’Alpe. Be careful in summer as it gets very busy.
(S/E) Take the well-markedGR®50on the left bank of the Torrent du Rif. Join the wide track leading to the chalets at Alpe du Lauzet. Continue to the footbridge spanning the torrent.

(1) Cross it and turn left onto the path leading to the clearly visible shepherd’s hut. Walk past the hut and take the path on the left. It is markedPR® but in a pale yellow colour. This is the Chemin du Roy.
Continue along this path, initially heading south-west, to reach the break in the ridge.

(2) Then head north-west and walk along a contour line that remains almost constant for about 3 km before reaching the junction at the Tunnel des Vallois.

(3) Take the path on the left, which quickly leads to the tunnel.
Walk back up the D1091 for about 100 metres and, at the second car park, take a wide path on the left which soon disappears. Descend as the terrain dictates to reach the track on the left bank of the Guisane.

(4) Turn left onto this track. This track also forms part of theGR®50and the markings change to red and white. Follow the almost level path to reach Le Lauzet after passing through the hamlet of La Madeleine and the Chapel of Font Cibert.

(5) Continue along the wide farm track to reach Le Lauzet.
Take the first street on the left, following theGR® markings, and cross the Torrent du Rif.

(6) Take the wide path on the left which leads back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There are plenty of water sources: at the Chalets de l’Alpe du Lauzet, and also (outside the summer season) the option to refill your water bottles from the streams flowing down the mountain.
Warning: this hike requires crossing the D1091 twice, and during the holiday season traffic is very heavy and drivers tend to drive at high speeds. So take extra care when crossing.
Standard hiking kit is required.
It should be noted that on this route, after crossing the ridge, where the path turns 90°, there is a section of approximately 800m that runs along a slope with an incline of around 30°. And on the downhill side there is no protection, no trees, just rocks. This may be a problem for those prone to vertigo, as the sensation of the drop-off can be felt here.

Worth a visit

Le Monétier-les-Bains and its water sports centre.
Briançon and its forts.

Hike on 24/07/2025
A beautiful and enjoyable hike. No problems with navigation. Follow the signs carefully, especially after crossing the road after the tunnel (head uphill towards Lautaret).
The most unpleasant part was the climb up to the flat section to cross the Rif torrent (1.5 km with lots of people and mountain bikes).
After that, there was no one else until the tunnel. The route is often shaded with beautiful views. The noise from the N1091 is only noticeable on very short sections.
3½ hours of walking for a 5-hour trip and 13 km.
We parked on the road on the left towards Lauzet before the Pont de l'Alpe.
We set off from the village of Lauzet, where a path leads to the Pont de l'Alpe.

A lovely walk for this time of year, when you can’t really go too high up (snow). We extended the walk by heading down the path to the hamlet of Le Casset, hoping to have a crêpe at Finette’s. It was closed......
