The Meuse plateau via Anhée, Warnant and Haut-le-Wastia

A very varied route passing through woods, fields and typical villages on the Meuse plateau above Anhée. Beautiful views of the undulating plateau, villages and rocks along the banks of the Meuse. The route takes in several beautiful little paths.

Description of the walk

Car park at the Place Communale in Anhée.

(S/E) Leave the car park on the side opposite the church. Turn right onto the RAVeL (a narrow tarmac path reserved for pedestrians and cyclists). After approximately 600 metres, cross a small road and, after another 600 metres, you will arrive at a busier road (Rue de la Molignée).

(1) Follow it to the right on a comfortable pavement on the right-hand side for ± 500 m. Cross the main road carefully and go up a small tarmac road opposite (Rue de Henneumont). Continue along this road after a sharp left-hand bend and continue uphill along the left-hand branch at a crossroads (very rough tarmac road, the continuation of Rue de Henneumont). After a detached house, the road becomes a dirt track. Continue for ± 600 m to reach the top of the fields on the Meuse plateau.

(2) At the crossroads (known as Praule), take the straight dirt track on the left, which leads to a large farm. When you reach a small road, turn left. Pass another large farm (Ferme de Corbais)

(3) Go around the farm on the left and admire the superb view of the undulating plateau (you can also see the church of Haut-le-Wastia perched high on its hill). Pass by an isolated house and continue along the path that descends to a road (Rue du Fond).

(4) Follow it to the right, ignoring a road on the right shortly afterwards to reach the village of Warnant. Continue along Rue du Fond for approximately 600 metres, pass Rue de Quinçay (on the left) and shortly afterwards you will see a tarmac path opposite Ruelle Colleau

(5). Turn left onto this path, which first descends and then climbs towards the church. At the end of the path, turn right, then left 50 m further on onto the tarmac road. Leave the church on your left and turn left at the end of the street. Pass the school and shortly afterwards you will find a dirt track on your right.

(6) Take this path, but leave it almost immediately for a path descending between the trees. At the end of this path, turn left onto the RAVeL. Turn right at the first crossroads, then turn left into Rue de la Molignée (take care). Leave it 100 m further on and take a small road on the right that leads to a campsite (excellent shaded picnic spot on the left).

(7) Leave the picnic spot on your left and continue towards the campsite. Go up a slightly steep rocky path after the campsite. It quickly reaches the edge of the forest (this is Chemin de Pauline, with beautiful views on the left). You will come to a road and follow it to the right.

(8) Go up to the left along a straight street (Rue Coron des Trys). At the end, turn right, pass in front of the church of Haut-le-Wastia and continue almost straight ahead to the cemetery.

(9) Go down the small path on the left that runs along the cemetery wall and go back up to a road (beautiful view of Haut-le-Wastia). Follow this road to the right for 50 metres, go up another small road on the left and continue immediately to the left. Pass in front of a house and continue to the right along a small path.

(10) Follow this very winding path. At a Y-junction, ignore the straight path on the right and take the downward branch on the left. Continue along the path and the road that extends from it until the forest ends on the left-hand side (T-junction). Take the path (sometimes muddy) to the left at the edge of the forest. You will come to a crossroads with a shrine under a magnificent old oak tree (bench)

(11). Turn right onto a small tarmac road. Continue straight ahead along a stony dirt track at a junction with another small road (small wood on the left). Continue along this path (beautiful views of the Champalle rocks and the ruins of Poilvache on the other bank of the Meuse) and pass the football pitch.

(12) Leave the path at a playground and cross the small meadow to the right. Look for a small bridge in the right-hand corner of the meadow, which crosses a small stream that is often dry. Cross it and immediately turn left onto the RAVeL. About 500 m further on, leave the RAVeL and head towards the Place Communale (E)

Notes

The two routes on the RAVeL require some caution due to a few (rare) cyclists who ride too fast.

At the time this route was created (6 September 2025), there was roadworks in the centre of Haut-le-Wastia. The road near the church was impassable, but it was easy to bypass the roadworks on the left and rejoin the route after the church.

Worth a visit

The medieval ruins of Poilvache (visible at the end of the walk on the rocks above the village of Houx) are worth a visit (admission fee), as are the ruins of Crêvecœur (above Bouvignes, free admission) and the ruins of Montaigle (further down the Molignée valley, admission fee).

Ice cream lovers will find excellent ice cream at the Biscuiterie Destrée, 50 metres from the picnic area (7)
