The Briesse Plateau - Dieulefit-Bourdeaux region

Pleasant circular path, mostly shaded. The ascent and descent are steady and present no technical difficulty. After rain, the path is easier to walk in the opposite direction.

Description of the walk

Start from the Grande Usine car park – Moulinages in Pont de Barret.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards Ruisseau de Névelet. About 30 metres further on, at the Ruisseau de Névelet signpost, follow the path which climbs to the right towards Briesse Nord. The path ends with a few steps and leads onto a wide track; follow this to the left.

The path becomes a tarmac road. Continue left on the D310 to leave the village. About 150m further on, on the right, you’ll reach the Briesse signpost.

(1) Turn right onto the path climbing towards Four de Cleissac. Pass the gate and immediately turn left onto the path which climbs steadily. At the crossroads, take the wide path on the right running alongside the Briesse ravine. Cross the Ruisseau de Briesse and head for the next junction, Four de Cleissac.

(2) Follow the path which climbs to the left towards Montagne de Briesse and winds through the woodland. At the edge of a large meadow, continue climbing through the woodland to reach a wide track, which you should take to the right. Walk across the Briesse plateau and reach the Montagne de Briesse crossroads.

(3) Continue to the right towards Quatre Chemins. Begin a gentle descent through the woodland and reach Quatre Chemins.

(4) Continue straight ahead, then slightly to the right until you finally reach the road at the La Jasse signpost.

(5) Follow the road to the right, staying on the main road as you descend gently towards the village centre. After passing the wall of a house, go down to the left and then right into the alleyway to reach the main street of Pont-de-Barret. Continue straight ahead to return to the starting car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Pont-de-Barret
Pont-de-Barret is a charming little village in an enchanting setting. Nestled comfortably at the foot of three mountains (Sainte-Euphémie, Éson and Briesse), the village is divided in two by the Roubion: on the right bank lies the old village and the ruins of its medieval fortifications; on the left bank, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Brune and the newer part of the village. The Gallo-Roman settlement known as Savenna was situated on the plain, a few hundred metres away. It was between the late 9th and 11th centuries that the inhabitants left the plain and the first buildings began to appear at the present site; the village subsequently developed on the left bank. The inhabitants built a bridge to cross the Roubion; this allowed them to reach the rocky outcrop of Éson, thus giving the name Pont de la Barre, which later became Pont-de-Barret.

A very pleasant walk, mainly through forest or undergrowth, perfect in hot weather! The return trail to Pont de Barret is not very well maintained (early summer, vegetation is growing!), but very easy to follow.
The estimated walking time was overestimated; we walked for barely two hours.

For the pleasure of walking in the woods. (Nice in summer)
Little or no panoramic or unobstructed view.
Return path: steep-sided, stony and slippery in wet weather.

As described. The landscape is fairly open at first, but then it’s all woodland. The downhill path is very stony. Best done in summer when it’s warm, or in autumn for mushroom hunters.

Please specify at the end of point 1 that you must cross the Briesse stream once, then turn right at the next fork and, 50 metres further on, cross the Briesse stream again, where you will find the Four de Cleissac signpost

A short hike in sweltering heat! We set off in full sun, but the path was shaded afterwards; a gentle, pleasant climb through the woods to the summit; take care on the way down, as the path is very stony and would certainly be slippery in wet weather.
Lovely view of Pont de Barret and the valley. Highly recommended!
