Col de Gleize car park, located 13 km north of Gap.
(S/E) From the car park, take the path that leaves from the left of the small forest house, towards Pic de Gleize.
Follow the yellow markings. The trail climbs uphill, offering a magnificent view of the Champsaur valley. At the first fork, continue straight ahead following the markings. The trail climbs through the pine trees to reach the mountain pastures on a flat area.
(1) Once you reach the Forest de l'Amoutty sign, continue straight ahead uphill towards Pic de Gleize. The trail turns left and then, about 400 metres further on, branches off to the right and north. It levels out and arrives between the Pic de Gleize and the Pic de l'Aiguille, on a small, unnamed pass with views of the Champsaur Valley on one side and the Dévoluy massif opposite.
(2) Take the left-hand path uphill, which immediately splits into two, marked by a cairn. Take the left-hand path that climbs (leaving the less visible right-hand path that descends) to reach Pic de Gleize.
(3) Retrace your steps to the unnamed pass.
(2) Turn left and begin the descent. A cairn and yellow markings will show the way. The trail is not very steep, but be careful not to slip on the small stones and the few remaining snow patches (early June).
There is a tricky section crossing a rocky area further down, where you need to be careful. The trail leads to a more pleasant alpine pasture, but you need to pay attention and look for the yellow markings on the larch trees and cairns to avoid getting lost. Overall, keep to the north-western ridge to eventually reach a beautiful trail (sentier de ronde).
(4) Turn right onto the trail and continue along the mountainside. Continue for a good kilometre, crossing several small streams.
(5) When a sign with yellow markings tells you to descend to the left into the pastures, follow it. The markings are very distant and it is easy to lose sight of the correct path. In any case, the path will follow the small stream further down, so head towards this small watercourse (Petit Buëch). Go around a flat, raised section of pasture on the left.
(6) Follow the stream (yellow markings) (source of the Petit Buëch on the left), then continue on the path that winds downhill.
(7) Cross the stream and climb the steps made from tree trunks opposite. The trail branches off to the right of the stream and descends towards the old village of Chaudun and the ONF rural lodge. All that remains of the village are the wall at the entrance to the chapel and the cemetery.
(8) Return to the lodge, continue along the road and cross the bridge on the left to take the forest track that climbs up to the Col de Gleize. This track, marked in yellow, arrives at the Col de Chabanotte.
(9) Continue to the Col du Milieu.
(10) Continue further and arrive at the Col de Gleize and the car park (S/E).
, and the ascent of the Gleize peak at the end is a bit like the grand finale of the hike. The GPS was essential for us as we had trouble finding the fork at point 4. The path to take is not at all obvious... Thank you for suggesting this very nice hike
