From the N85, 500 metres north of Col Bayard, a small road branches off to the left (west) (wooden sign) towards Col de Gleize, where you will find the Col de Gleize car park.
(S/E) The trail starts to the north, behind the forest house. Follow the signpost. The trail climbs very quickly in switchbacks through the forest, mainly pine and larch, to reach an alpine pasture.
(1) At the "Le Forest de l'Amouty" signpost (1,830 m), continue straight ahead, following the direction of Pic de Gleize.
(2) At around 1970m, a small, inconspicuous crossroads marked on the ground by a yellow mark on a rock gives you two choices:
- the first on the left, which is rather exposed, climbs up the ridge on the mountainside.
- The second one on the right goes through a pass.
We chose the first option (left), which is certainly more fun and joins the ridge of Pic de Gleize. You have to climb this ridge almost to the summit.
You will pass small rocky outcrops where you may need to use your hands. Then, follow the ridge to reach the summit.
(3) From there, take a moment to enjoy the view. Then head west towards Pic de Chaudin. Descend and then quickly climb back up to the summit. The peak looks impressive in the foreground, in front of Pic de Bure.
(4) From Pic de Chaudin, retrace your steps.
(5) In a hollow and before climbing back up, look for a path that follows a contour line and follow it to the pass.
(6) At the pass, continue straight ahead, keeping Pic de l'Aiguille in your sights, and walk along the ridge. Please note: as you walk, the path becomes narrower and steeper... The end is very exposed, so it is best to stop a little before you reach it.
(7) When you decide to turn back, you will need to retrace your steps to return to the pass.
(6) Back at the pass, descend to the right and continue to follow the yellow markings. The descent is quite steep but easy, with just one rocky section that is a little tricky to navigate before you come out onto a mountain pasture. From there, you will need to be careful as the path disappears a little in the grass of the mountain pasture: keep an eye out for the yellow markings, which occasionally disappear; the important thing is to stay on course: north-west. Continue the descent to the crossroads of paths in the valley near the sources of the Buech.
(8) When you reach a wide path, turn left. You will find a clearly visible path marked with yellow signs. This path remains on a ledge for a long time. Notice the ruins of the old village of Chaudun below. Continue along this ledge path. Go around the Montagne de Chaudun to reach
the Col de Chabenottes (sign).
(9) Continue straight on towards the Col du Milieu.
(10) When you reach the Chaudun forest road, continue straight ahead to return to the car park (S/E).
