The Île Vierge lighthouse on foot

It takes about thirty minutes to walk to Île Vierge and its lighthouse, the tallest in Europe (82 m) and the tallest stone lighthouse in the world.
Please note: this walk should only be undertaken at low tide during spring tides (coefficient >110). Do not attempt it in mist, fog or other adverse weather conditions.
The lighthouse can be visited during the mid and high seasons (seethe Abers tourist office) around high tide.

Description of the walk

The departure point is at the tip of Kastell Ac'h in the commune of Plouguerneau. The tip is only accessible on foot from the various car parks, which are few in number and quickly fill up during the season or during spring tides (shellfish gathering).

(S/E) Take the stone ramp at the point and finish with a staircase to descend onto the coarse sand of the beach.

(1) Continue along the beach towards the north-east and reach the rocky shoal.

(2) Turn north-northwest and walk carefully along the rocky outcrop: seaweed covers the rocks, some of which are a little unstable.

(3) Move away from the edge of the rocky outcrop and continue through the centre, crossing a few shallow pools.

(4) Return to the coarse sand to reach the stone slipway on Île Vierge. Reach the foot of the lighthouse.

(5) Follow the path in reverse to return to the starting point on the mainland (S/E).

Notes

Walk taken during the tide of the decade on 12 March 2024 (coefficient of 117).

Start 30 to 45 minutes before low tide to accompany the end of the ebb tide and arrive on the island at low tide, allowing yourself time to return without putting unnecessary pressure on yourself.

Check the tide times for Ile Vierge.

To keep your feet dry, wear boots.

The Abers tourist office organises two or three guided walks per year, including a visit to the lighthouse and return by boat (three dates in 2024: 9/04, 20/09 and 18/10).
Return boat trips are also available from April to October with fairly short slots for visiting the lighthouse. The ticket for visiting the lighthouse (tourist office) is different from the boat ticket (Vedettes des Abers). The prices are as salty as the water (€15 for the boat and €9 for the lighthouse in summer 2023).

Worth a visit

Île Vierge lighthouse(s): very short visiting slots (approximately 2 hours) around high tide, from April to September.
