A pleasant little walk to explore the Rambouillet Castle Park and the Bergerie.
A walk that allows you to visit either the Bergerie or the Museum located in the Palais du Roi de Rome.

Description of the walk

Head to Rambouillet station.

(S/E) On leaving the station, with your back to the station, turn left and walk downhill to Rue Chasles opposite. Continue straight ahead to Place Félix Faure, where the entrance to the château grounds is located.

(1) Enter the park through this gate. Follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®1, which runs to the left of the Étang du Rondeau. Go round it on the right until you reach the canal. Exit through the green gate, follow the canal to reach the statues and arrive at the statue of Diana on the left.

(2) Leave the GR® and take the grassy path on the right, which climbs slightly. Pass an information board on your left.
At the junction with a wide path, take this path on the left. At the bench on the left, turn right onto another wide path. Continue uphill to reach the park’s boundary wall.

(3) Turn right, then right again at the next junction. Walk past the Hermitage and head down a grassy path to reach the waterways and the bridge over the Ruisseau de Guéville.

(4) Before the bridge, turn right and follow this branch of the stream. Take the next bridge on the left and cross another bridge to reach the Chaumière aux Coquillages.

(5) Walk past the cottage on your right, cross a small bridge and immediately turn right onto a faint path that runs between the waterways. Cross the humpback bridge. Cut diagonally across a barely visible path to the fence. Leave the Jardin Anglais and rejoin theGR®®. Follow it for a few metres to the left to reach a multi-way junction.

(6) Leave theGR®® here and continue straight ahead, crossing the quiet road. Also ignore the road on the left leading to the Laiterie de la Reine. Walk up the lawn behind the small wooden posts. You will arrive at the Étang de la Faisanderie. Continue to the left, skirting the pond, and then head towards the Bergerie Nationale.

(7) Retrace your steps to return to the previous crossroads.

(6) Take the Discovery Trail on the left, which initially runs parallel to the road. Then walk through the undergrowth, moving slightly away from the road. Pass an insect house on the right, walk past an old ice house on your left and reach a five-way junction.

(8) Take the faint path on the right, cross a meadow and join the road at the end of the canal. Continue on to reach the junction with Rue de la Motte.

(9) Turn right onto it, continue along Rue Poincaré and keep going until you reach Rue du Général de Gaulle.

(10) Turn left onto it, pass in front of Rambouillet Town Hall and continue on to reach the Parc du Palais du Roi de Rome.

(11) Continue past the sub-prefecture and return to the original junction at Place Félix Faure.

(1) Turn left, then right, following the route back in the opposite direction to return to Rambouillet Station (S/E).

A stroll through the grounds of Rambouillet Castle, with lovely views of the canals, ponds and the English garden.
To visit the seashell cottage and the Queen’s dairy along the route, buy a ticket in advance at the château.
The final section of the route through the town (and the King of Rome’s Palace) is of little interest; instead, return via the castle’s majestic main avenue and along the ponds.

At point 2, you leave the GR 1; it would have been helpful to mention this.
Also at point 2, the ‘discrete path’ is in fact a fairly wide grassy track.
There is an error in the description between points 7 and 8: the path crossing the meadow is after the car park, not before.
We then leave the park by turning right onto Rue de la Motte, with Rue R Pointcarré being its continuation.

We went for a walk whilst the ground was still frozen solid in places, so we had to zigzag and take detours quite a bit to avoid the particularly slippery patches. Part of the route was actually closed off.
I hadn’t read the previous review, but I’d make the same comments, particularly regarding the final section.
If you come by car, there is a charge for parking except on Sundays.
The sheepfold is closed on Sunday mornings.
But a lovely walk, with plenty of birds at the ponds and very peaceful stretches, contrasting with others frequented by numerous joggers

As a resident of Rambouillet, I’d like to add a few details:
- Please note the opening hours of the château grounds: the section between Le Rondeau and point 6 is only accessible from 10am to 5pm in winter. The rest of the route through the grounds is accessible without restrictions.
- For motorists, enter the park via Rue de la Motte (at point 8) and park at the start of Route de la Ferme
- Between the Bergerie and point 8, there is a slight deviation from the route, which does not exactly follow the nature trail indicated in the description
- Towards the end of the route, rather than leaving the park at point 8, it is more pleasant to exit at the town hall.
Enjoy your walk!
