Le Moucherotte

A fairly challenging hike starting from the Tremplin car park (built for the 1968 Grenoble Olympic Games) leading to the Moucherotte orientation table and its wonderful 360° panorama.

Description of the walk

Park in the Tremplin car park.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the track heading south-west for about 2.5 km, ignoring the side paths.
You will reach an intersection with a sign indicating that you should leave the track.

(1) Climb to the left following the yellow and green markings. At first, the path is fairly wide, but it gradually becomes very steep. When the path narrows, take great care on the steep, slippery slopes (especially after rain), as this is a very difficult section. You will come out at Pas de la Bergère.

(2) Head south, still following the yellow and green markings, towards Moucherotte. The path continues to climb, but the slopes are much less steep than before. Join a track.

(3) Pick up the red and white markings ofthe GR®91and take the track on the left towards Moucherotte. You will come to a sign indicating an orientation table.

(4) Climb to the left, towards the orientation table and Moucherotte. A wonderful 360° panorama awaits you. The orientation table allows you to identify all the surrounding peaks.

(5) Turn back and descend to the previous intersection.

(4) Descend to the left towards Saint-Nizier. Pass a refuge and arrive at a junction of paths (not shown on the map).

(6) Leave the path that branches off to the right and stay on theGR® trail heading south. Stay on this trail, ignoring any side paths. You will reach a track.

(7) Follow the track downhill to the left. After a left-hand bend, the track becomes a path. Please note that the markings have disappeared and there are no signs. When yellow and green markings reappear on a tree, take the path that descends to the right. At the next intersection, turn left, then left again a few metres further on. Later, at the Y-junction, take the right-hand route leading to the track at the start of the hike. Turn right to return to the Tremplin car park (S/E).

A circular route, pretty but often on stony paths and can quickly become impassable in rain or snow.
A good alternative to the direct route.
For people who are comfortable and fit.

Hike completed at a good pace in 3 hours at the beginning of March in bright sunshine, with snow from around 1,600 metres, including icy snow at the Pas de la Bergère, the steepest section (you need to use your hands), requiring crampons to climb. Didn't meet anyone before joining the GR coming from Lans. All in all, a good alternative way to reach the Moucherotte! 🙏

Climb up to Moucherotte via the Pas de la Bergère, which is a bit tricky as it is shaded and slippery. Descent by headlamp via the Roc de Bataillon with crampons due to the presence of icy snow. The idea was to film the sunset in November.

A superb alternative to the simple return trip on the GR91.
Out of season and with the autumn leaves falling, the trail through the forest was not easy to follow without the yellow/green markings on the trees and rocks just before the Pas de la Bergère. There seems to be a missing marker, which led us astray for several metres, but it was not dangerous.
Be sure to follow the suggested route, especially in wet weather, as we experienced.

A pleasant and easy hike, completed in two days with a bivouac at the summit.
Beautiful views guaranteed.
Completed in 3½ hours at a brisk pace, I highly recommend it.

On the advice of a resident of St Nizier, we set off from the car park at the end of Chemin du Mollarout, which is just above St Nizier and is also on the author's route. We easily joined the author's trail, first passing point 8, where we turned right (south-west). After a large curve, we found the author's trail between points 1 and 2 (Les Clots).
The Pas de la Bergère pass is tricky for people who are sensitive to steep slopes. You have to use your hands several times. However, it is not technically difficult.
The rest of the route offers beautiful views of Grenoble, Belledonne, Chartreuse, etc. But be careful, those prone to vertigo should stick to the GR91.

A really enjoyable hike. This is the second time I've done it. It seems to me that there are more markings on the trees and rocks than before. The passage at Pas de la Bergère is still a bit tricky. But otherwise, it's really nice with very diverse views. We took a detour at the end of the route to pass by Les Trois Pucelles with a small handrail, which I didn't find particularly difficult.
