Description of the walk

(S) Start from the Saint Nizier viewpoint.
Take theGR®91due south, which climbs towards Moucherotte; once on the forest track, you’ll come to a junction – turn left if you want to climb Moucherotte, otherwise continue straight on (as on my route) until you reach a sign pointing to Pas de la Bergère on the left. Reach this pass.

(1) Continue on to rejoin theGR®91.

(2) Turn right and follow the signs for Les Ramées to reach Habert des Ramées.

(3). Continue straight ahead and follow a track to rejoin theGR®91.

(4) Take it to the right, passing the lower stations of the resort’s ski lifts. You’ll reach the car parks.

(5) Continue along theGR® to reach the Auberge des Allières lodge.

(6) Continue across this plateau and along the GR®. Pass the small pass of Furon. Shortly afterwards, take the Chemin des Anciens to reach the crossroads at the source of Font Froide.

(7) Take the Sentier Gobert opposite; this is also theGR® 91 and theGRP® Tour des 4 Montagnes, marked in white and red. Follow the almost level path to reach the Cabane de Roybon.

(8) Leave theGR® here and take the good path opposite, then continue to the Cabane de la Fauge.

(9) Here you have two options:
- spend the night at the hut,
- camp in the Tanaz garden mentioned on the route (E).

Be careful on this section; apparently there are other routes that are much more suitable. The climb up to Moucherotte is dreadful – very steep and slippery. There are sections where you have to scramble (really not fun and not very safe when you’re carrying a 15-kilo rucksack). It really took the wind out of our sails, but apparently there are other routes you can take to cover the same stretch.

At the top, the plateau is very pretty! You can top up your water near the cable cars on the descent, just after point 4. There’s a spring there where you can lighten your rucksacks and drink your fill.

In the evening, we stayed at the Roybon hut, which is really lovely and cosy. Apparently much nicer than the Faure shelter. The spring water is drinkable. We spent the evening there before other hikers arrived (bring earplugs 😉).
Just be aware that if you stay there, you’ve got a very long day ahead of you the next day.

"Variations": we went via Lans for lunch in the morning, then on to Les Allières, climbed Pic Saint Michel and descended via the Col de l'Arc. The view was magnificent above the clouds.
The route is challenging at times and requires a good level of fitness. The balcony path above Villard is on the edge of steep slopes, so please be careful.

Camping near the cliffs surrounding the Col Vert allowed us to enjoy an incredible sunrise. Be warned, we heard a wolf during the night

Great hike, thanks! The climb up to the Pas de la Bergère was a bit tricky with the wet rocks and the lack of signposting on the ground, but nothing impossible
