Mont Fleuri in the Aravis

This is a circular that takes you off the beaten track.
To escape the tourist crowds that flock to the valleys in the summer, take the route to a little-visited summit, which is as high as you could wish for and will take you along one of the most beautiful ridges in the area.
The route requires sure-footedness, determination and a little bit of flair to enjoy it.
Thishike is reserved for experienced hikers; see reviews.

Description of the walk

Park at the Confins car park above La Clusaz.

(S/E) Take the wide track that leads to the Refuge de la Bombardellaz. You will soon reach the Chalets de Paccaly.

(1) Continue straight ahead to reach the Refuge de la Bombardellaz.

(2) Then take the marked trail indicating the Combe de la Grande Forclaz. Follow the red markings and a few cairns to an altitude of approximately 2,250 metres.
Leave the path towards the north-east, climbing a steep scree slope diagonally to the left. Aim for a gap in the ridge line.

(3) A few cairns allow you to cross to the left via a short but exposed passage in loose rock that leads to a grassy shoulder that is steep but easy to climb. In a few minutes, you will climb this grassy ridge, which becomes less difficult and reveals the ridge route that follows.
Continue to the summit of Mont Fleuri, which poses no problems in terms of route. And for good reason: you won't even encounter a mountain goat on this sharp and impressive ridge.
The walk is easy but exposed, and you must take care not to slip until you reach the very rustic summit cross.

(4) To return, turn around and take the ridge in the opposite direction to altitude 2349 (rocky breach).
From there, swing to your left (Mont Blanc side) to descend a steep but very short rocky couloir. 30 m further down, you will come to a path that you must follow to the right. Cross under the gendarmes and climb back up to the ridge, 100 m further south-west. Join the Passage de la Grande Forclaz.

(5) Continue along the ridge on a good path that quickly swings over to the south side. Make an ascending traverse across a grassy slope and then across slabs. You will reach the base of a breach that you will need to climb up. The path does not go inside but zigzags along the right edge. The exit onto the ridge is very close to the summit of Ambrevetta, at around 2,430 metres.

(6) Follow the classic path to Pointe de Tardevant, up to the summit at 2,501 m.

(7) Descend via the ridge heading north-west. The start is grassy, easy and slightly exposed. Then, the ridge becomes increasingly steep, giving way to loose rock interspersed with steps.
Be careful and watch your step, staying as far to the right as possible (the slopes on the left lead to a steep and dangerous couloir).
The slope becomes even steeper and overlooks an easy but exposed rocky passage. Go around the obstacle on the right to reach a breach at around 2,220 m.
From there, descend into a very steep grassy couloir towards the south-west. This couloir is about 100 m high, and falling is prohibited even if the path is obvious. Look for passages on the left, skirting the rocks, which will also protect you from falling rocks. At the bottom of the couloir, take a foothold in the cone of stones that follows and slide gently towards the exit of this intimate combe, keeping to the left.
At an altitude of around 2,070 metres, it becomes very easy to reach the marked path of the Combe de Tardevant. Join this path.

(8) Then take the right-hand path to Combe de Tardevant. You will come to a crossroads where a sign indicates "Paccaly, les Confins".

(9) Turn left, cross Paccaly from above and you will soon reach the Chalets de Paccaly.

(1) Retrace your steps to return to the Les Confins car park (S/E).

Notes

You can refill your water bottles at the Refuge de la Bombardellaz (fresh water fountain).

It's a good idea to take a light ice axe with you to help with the descents and for reassurance on the ridge.
A piece of rope and a strap are also useful for the descent from Tardevent, especially for those who are not experienced in this type of terrain.

A pair of binoculars is also a good idea for seeing the glistening ice of Mont Blanc on a clear day...

(7) For the return trip, you can go back to Ambrevetta (6) and then take the classic route back via Combe de Tardevant and the lake of the same name, joining the route at (8).

Worth a visit

(4) In addition to the magnificent panorama of the Mont Blanc range, from here you have a breathtaking view of the Bargy range, the Glières plateau, Les Auges, the Beauregard plateau, Tête à Turpin towards Annecy and even Lake Geneva in good weather.

Hiking (not mountaineering) done at the end of May 2025. Until July 2025, the route from Chalet de Paccaly(1) towards the Bombardellaz refuge was closed, so I took the opposite direction of the circuit to point(9) and cut left. As I made my way through the Combe de la Grande Forclaz, I decided to turn back: the area was completely snow-covered. I followed the path backwards via points 9 and 8 and climbed to the pointe de Tardevant(7) instead of descending. The description is useful, especially the GPX trace. And I came back down via the classic route from the pointe de Tardevant, which is also completely snow-covered all the way to the lake. I've done T4 routes several times, and it was easy enough to notice the difference with T5 and the EXTREME nature of the hike on the ridge. High exposure, unstable terrain over much of the route, 3 or 4 névés and, in places, it's still wet. In short, I quickly realised that it was indeed forbidden to fall. In my opinion, I ventured out too early in the season and made the mistake of underestimating the level required. So I've got some advice to give: think carefully before you venture! Climbing the ridge is pretty treacherous, you can't see the end; the beginning is fairly straightforward, but the more difficult it gets, the quicker you can get stuck in an unstable and very exposed spot. Honestly, I'm not going to do it again xD. Good luck to anyone who wants to take this route!

A superb hike that really does get you off the beaten track! The "extreme" difficulty is clearly stated. Nothing complicated for an experienced hiker/trail runner. However, for a Sunday walker or someone prone to vertigo, the route is not suitable. Everything is clearly explained at the more tricky sections. Thank you, Pierro, for sharing this. I regret that there aren't more extreme hikes in the area.

Hello,

I am the author of this description, and I hope you don't mind too much...!
I am sorry that you and your group encountered difficulties during this walk; that was absolutely not the intention!

Nevertheless, I believe that the description and the approval of the Visorando administrators allow people to know what they are getting into. Otherwise, this suggestion would have been removed from the database.

I haven't shared many walks on this site because, at the time, I was more of a "climber" than a walker, and I now understand that this hike can be extremely tricky, even dangerous for people who are not prepared.
For this kind of adventure, I think it's best to scout the route alone (or with one other person) before setting off with a group, even if they are experienced walkers...

I hope no one was injured or traumatised. I am aware that bad experiences in the mountains can trigger fears or put people off the activity if the level of the outing is not suited to the skills and experience of the participants...

Believe me, after reviewing the itinerary and the map, I can assure you that there are trips that are even more exposed and much more dangerous than this one. We are on the borderline between independent walking on trails and exploring wild areas, which require thought, observation and decision-making based on experience.

Enjoy the summer and the mountains with full awareness of your actions. I hope you can get over this misstep and I apologise once again.

Kind regards.

Hello GGa,

Thank you again for these useful details for anyone who might want to venture there.
When I suggested this walk, I had no idea it would cause such a stir, especially with the repeated warnings in the initial description and in the comments that followed!

That's why I no longer participate in this kind of sharing:
1 - You're always the little brother of someone bigger.
2 - People shift their responsibilities onto the author of the descriptions when things go wrong...
3 - You can unwittingly encourage walkers to try things they're not comfortable with!

In short, have a great time walking this summer, and enjoy the mountains while being fully aware of your actions...

Best regards.

It seems to me that the author is very clear about the level of difficulty of this proposal!
I completed this route in August 2018 and 2020 in good conditions. There is still snow in the large combes due to avalanches from the previous winter, which was an exceptional year in the Aravis, but otherwise the ridge is very long and narrow but perfectly dry this morning.
Return via the variant described in points 6-7 or 7 and 8.
If you follow the author's instructions carefully and read the terrain well, then there should be no problem with this option. I can confirm that from the top of the ridge, there is no visibility for the last 300 metres, so be careful!
If in doubt, and if there are several of you, turn back.
I think it is essential to respect the authors' freedom of expression on this site, and there were enough warnings to raise awareness.
Not up to standard: refrain!
The mountains remain a place of free expression but are still dangerous, even with solid experience.

Hello, hike completed on 16/07/2022 with the following comments:
- The ascent of Mont Fleuri is indeed very exposed, and the passage between points (3) and (4) is not marked at all and is only suitable for experienced climbers, but this point has already been commented on previously.
- The descent via points (7) and (8) at the foot of the Aiguilles Noires should simply be prohibited. Not to mention the lack of a trail, this very challenging alpine and rocky descent poses a real danger, which caused us to turn back, even though we are experienced hikers. The author's description conveys the danger of taking this route, which presents several major difficulties (first a very steep grassy couloir, then an almost inaccessible breach, and finally another 100-metre grassy couloir, which is also very dangerous), exposing hikers to unnecessary risks. In my opinion, it should not be suggested as an option for returning from the top of Tardevant, unless you want to send ambitious hikers into a potentially no-return situation once they have embarked on this section. It would be better to suggest only the return via the Tardevant valley and then the lake of the same name.
I hope that this comment will prevent other hikers from experiencing the great difficulty that can be encountered between points (7) and (8) of this route.

Done on 23/08/2019. Everything has been said about the ridge, it's passable but not entirely upright for me, a few tricky sections, the terrain is average. The descent to the 2349m peak just after the ridge and the grassy steps seems to me to be the trickiest section, with unstable schistose terrain. To a lesser extent, the 30m steep descent after the 2349m pass.
Thank you for this beautiful route.

A somewhat exposed hike, with significant snow cover this year but no particular difficulty, and a sharp ridge on a few short sections that should be avoided if the ground is wet.
I took the alternative route via Tardevant, following the author's advice to bypass the rocky outcrop on the lower part of the route on the right.
In summary, a beautiful circular for hikers ++.

Hello Jean-Christophe,

It's true that this "walk" proposal is rather exposed, but when I posted it online, I took great care to specify in bold type that the outing was reserved for experienced hikers!

I haven't spent much time on the site and don't have enough contributions to understand the spirit of Visorando. So, this outing may be unwelcome, but I consider it to be of medium difficulty in terms of the difficulty of the walk. This is different from the exposure of the tricky terrain and the risk of rock falls...
I wouldn't mind if a site moderator decided to delete it, although I would find that a shame.

I didn't want to encourage hikers to take risks, but rather to discover a nice area...

Anyone who goes into the mountains independently must be able to judge their own abilities by assessing the terrain according to their own criteria. You then commit to your own judgement, not by reading a comment posted on the internet.

My feelings about this walk will not be the same as those of the next person who treads this little ridge, and I still dare to believe that the "people" who enjoy the peaks are still somewhat responsible for themselves in choosing their path.

Regarding the exposure of this circular, I read in the comments below:

A passage that leaves no room for error and is for alpine hikers.
Some tricky sections
Progress on the ridge is indeed very difficult
No room for error and the rock is very crumbly in places...
''The description of the exposed section deserves an additional warning, in my opinion.
For my part, I was unable to go there."

It seems that any internet user who comes across this description and these comments should be sufficiently informed to realise the difficulty of the undertaking, right?

Thank you for this last message. I am, of course, open to discussion, but I hope we don't make a big deal out of it!

Best regards.

:!(!)!(!:!!:!)!:
Hello,
This hike should not be offered by Visorando.
Unless it is classified as extremely difficult.
I live in Le Grand-Bornand and am a native of Haute-Savoie, experienced in difficult hikes and climbing up to D+
1) The climb to Mont Fleuri point 3 to 4 is not a hiking route, it is an extremely dangerous route due to its exposure and the terraced schist terrain, not to mention the final ridge where you couldn't even pass a mountain goat. It should be done with at least two people, roped together.
2) The descent from Tardevent via the mountain path is of the same calibre. Totally exposed, then a final couloir at nearly 45° straight down the slope. Crazy!
I therefore recommend cancelling this hike, which is not in the spirit of Visorando.
Best regards,

I did this hike yesterday... The trail was made by walking through snow... It's not the same on dry trails. The arrival at Mont Fleuri is clear... But if you do the return in a circular fashion, things get a little heated. It can be done... But as the description says... This is a passage that leaves no room for error and is for alpine hikers.

I did this hike today.
Access to the Bombardellaz refuge is really no problem at all; don't make the same mistake I did by confusing the Bombardellaz chalets (which are actually quite pretty) with the Bombardellaz refuge, which resulted in a slight detour.

I encountered snow in the Combe de la Grande Forclaz (so the ascent was a little slower than expected).
The approach to Mont Fleuri was quite interesting (with a few tricky sections, just as I like them). Given the snow, I approached the ridge via the slope on the other side of the pass (which seemed easier) and followed the same route for the return journey.

Otherwise, there were no real difficulties (although there were a few passages that required caution), as I took the path leading to the lake without going via the summit of Tardevant (due to lack of time).
On the way back, the half-frozen lakes were quite pretty.

Thank you.

The climb up the ridge is indeed very difficult! There's no room for error and the rock is very crumbly in places... I couldn't find the easy way back, so I descended via the Combe de Tardevant.
