The listed Vegay Waterfall as seen from the village of Aiglun

A moderately strenuous but very pleasant walk. It is the largest recorded and listed natural waterfall in the Alpes-Maritimes, with its three successive drops. The waterfall is exceptional and, in terms of height, is matched only by its Icelandic twin sisters. The start and end of this route offer a chance to discover the beautiful architectural heritage of Aiglun. Thanks to its strategic location, the inn is a popular spot at the end of this round trip in the Estéron.

Description of the walk

Coming from Roquesteron, Aiglun has plenty of parking spaces on the outskirts of the village.

(S/E) Head towards the village, taking care to stay on the main road, which continues through a road tunnel beneath a house. You’ll arrive in the heart of Aiglun, comprising the town hall, the church and the village inn. A signpost indicates Pont de Vascogne-Vegay. Head into the village along the cobbled Rue Frédéric Mistral, which winds its way between the old houses. At the lower end of the village, a few steps lead to a path; take this and follow a stone wall through a wooded area. Continue to signpost no. 81.

(1) Continue along the path until you reach the sewage treatment plant. Leave the Chemin de Eigages on your left, and take the path on the right; you will rejoin this path further on.

(2) Take it to the right and continue to marker 82. Here, join the GR®4.

(3) Turn left onto the GR®, following the signs for Vegay and the red and white markings. Continue along the track, crossing another stone bridge, just as beautiful as the previous one. Continue to marker 83.

(4) Turn right onto the wooded uphill path. Follow the signs for Cascade de Vegay along this very pleasant, gently sloping path. Only a section of about twenty metres is in poor condition, but poses no danger. Views of Aiglun from the Estéron. Walk past the oratory to the next crossroads.

(5) Leave the GR® here by turning left and follow the signs for Cascade de Vegay to reach the viewpoint overlooking the waterfall.

(6) Turn back and return via the same route to the Aiglun car park (S/E).

(3): crossing the Pont sur l’Estéron, a magnificent ancient stone bridge.

Thank you, alyssar06, for your review,
The path starts below the village, at the last house.
As for the winding road, the whole of the hinterland is like that; that’s also what makes
its unique charm
Best regards, Rando B.

Hike on 29 April
We had a bit of a problem at the start: which path should we take?
We started by descending a long way along a very narrow, stony path, hemmed in by vegetation. Marker 81 at the start of the village and, right at the bottom of the path, marker 81 again, leading onto a track. No signposts? Should we go left or right? To our left, a path through the deciduous trees took us a few metres further down to the same track. Then we reach the GR4 at marker 82. We cross two pretty bridges between markers 82 and 83. Then we turn left (5) towards the Végay Waterfall. On the path, there’s a section damaged by a fallen tree – a bit tricky, but passable.

  • Unfortunately, the waterfall isn’t fully visible, as the vegetation is in full regrowth and hides the top from view. It must be splendid when the trees are bare. Impossible to cross today as it’s too slippery, nor to climb higher. We tried a bit without success!

Coming from Nice, the road is too long and winding (all the way). We won’t be doing that again.
