Along the Mollières valley

A very beautiful hike starting from the Tinée Valley to discover the lost hamlet of Mollières. It is a bit long but has a very gradual climb, making it easily accessible.
Temporary ban in 2023, see notices.

Description of the walk

About 5 km after passing Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée, you will pass under the Paule bridge and then come across the Valabres hydroelectric plant. There is a small car park immediately after on your right, and a sign describing the Mercantour Park marks the start of the hike.

(S/E) Go through the barrier and cross the bridge. You will then come across marker 259, which indicates that the hamlet of Mollières is a 3 hour 15 minute walk away. You will now follow the track that provides access to the various hydroelectric facilities in the Mollières valley for a few kilometres.

(1) You will come to a small bridge on your right. Ignore it and continue along the track.

(2) You will arrive at the old hamlet of Peyre Blanque (Pierre Blanche). Pass the factory and continue along the track. You will see some ruins on your left as you climb. A few metres further up, the track ends at a dam and turns into a footpath.

(3) You will arrive at marker 260. Continue gently along the path towards the hamlet.

(4) You will cross a new bridge over the valley to reach Lous Pras, another old hamlet where you can still see a few ruins and numerous terraces. Continue along the path, in the shadow of Mont Saint Sauveur.

(5) Be careful here, as the path turns uphill to the left. The yellow mark is on a stone in the middle of the path and is a little faded. If you continue straight ahead, you will find yourself above the river with no path to follow. Pay close attention and climb up to the left, then continue your ascent. You will come across the old ruins of L'Éduch (destroyed by the German army during the Second World War) on the other side of the valley, then a little further up, a cross and a commemorative plaque in memory of two inhabitants of Mollières.

(6) Once again, be careful, as the path is not always very visible. Look for the yellow mark on the tree to your left, which indicates that you should climb. If you continue straight ahead, you will find yourself in the valley bed, where the numerous stones make it difficult to progress. The climb becomes a little steeper for a few metres but quickly levels out again. Cross a small wooden bridge and continue along the path; you're almost there!

(7) You have finally arrived at the hamlet of Mollières. The cemetery is the first building you will see, and if you have come here outside the summer months, there is a very good chance that the hamlet will be completely deserted. Enjoy the peace and quiet before heading back down the same path you came up to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

(S/E) Note that the stream that runs alongside this hike originates a little higher up at Lac Nègre, above the Col de Salèse. The start is a little austere, especially as the path is not yet lit in the morning, but don't worry, this changes quickly once you reach the end of the track.

Please note: a word of warning before you start: there are many water sources along the route. I advise against drinking from them, as a sign in the hamlet indicates thatthe water in the valley is unfit for consumption (high levels of arsenic and other nasties). You have been warned.
Although there is a fairly steep climb (nearly 1,000 metres), this hike is very accessible as it is gradual.
Apart from the points (5) and (6) where you need to be a little careful, the path is particularly easy to follow and presents no difficulty.

Once again, avoid drinking from the various water sources you will come across (including the village wash house, which flows continuously), as the water is unlikely to be safe to drink.

For your information, it took me 4 hours and 15 minutes of actual walking to make the round trip without rushing too much.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

(7) Mollières is a truly unusual hamlet. Inhabited for only a few months of the year, it is one of the last to have no electricity. Even the telephone seems to have difficulty reaching it (the line was cut in several places when I went up there).

If you visit during the winter months, you may feel quite alone as there are rarely any inhabitants at this time of year. This reinforces the hamlet's timeless feel, with its twenty or so houses in perfect condition contrasting with the desert-like silence that reigns there.

The history of Mollières is also quite incredible, see http://www.mollieres.fr/

The first half has not yet been restored, but is easily passable. When the path is destroyed, follow the blue paint marks.

Thank you for these details. I had been thinking about returning to Molière in the last few days, thinking that nature had regained the upper hand since Storm Alex. This is not the case. Maybe one day.

Hello, the route has been closed since 2020 following Storm Alex, which ravaged the path in several places that are not easy to get around... Not recommended. The route is not likely to be repaired anytime soon, if ever, as there is already so much work to be done in the Vésubie Valley...

Good evening,

I would like to inform our hikers of the current difficulties on this particular route, which are likely to continue for some time.

Following Storm Alex, I advise against taking this route. The trail has been washed away in many places at high altitudes, making it difficult to find alternative routes without taking risks. In addition, companies are working in the Mollières valley bed, which is completely closed to the public. I have been walking this route for years and I must admit that I was surprised by the situation. It usually takes me three hours to climb up to the hamlet of Mollières, but today it took me that long just to get to about 1 km from the hamlet. With no path left, I had to cross the stream amid rocks and fallen trees, a real game of pick-up sticks. Stop. Maybe one day, but it will take a huge amount of work to make this route passable again. Please be careful.

Hike that begins with a long forest track, tricky ford, trail devastated by rain, relatively interesting.

On 15 August, Mollières Day, the ideal day for this hike, it took us exactly three hours to cover the 9 km from the car park to the cemetery (at the entrance to the village). On this day, you will find everything you need to eat and drink on site.
It seems a little long when you don't know the area, and you feel like you'll never reach Mollières, but what a reward when you arrive.
Before the final climb, the path is not very clear because it is rarely used and somewhat overgrown with plants.
You have to look carefully along the way to understand that all the ruins you come across or spot along the route - Pere Blanque, Foulques, Lous Press, l'Educh - were hamlets inhabited until the last war, and were all burned down by the Germans at the end of the war in retaliation against the resistance.

Hello, lovely walk, a bit long as I'm hiking alone, but it's a bit short for the season. Best regards.
