Along the River Eyre from Mios

A circular path following the Grande Leyre, a river which flows into the basin after joining its main tributary, the Petite Leyre. A very pretty, shaded path along a calm, wild river, with lovely scenery. Return via a pine forest.
In the event of heavy rain, the path may be impassable.

Description of the walk

Park at Mios, Allée de la Plage.

(S/E) Head towards the River Eyre, then follow the path on the right which runs alongside the river.

(1) Cross the bridge over the Ruisseau d'Andron. Follow theGR® path (marked in red and white). Walk alongside the river on your left and a tree-top adventure park on your right.

(2) Leave theGR®. Be careful, the path veers to the right. If you miss this turn-off, you will soon find yourself blocked in as you are surrounded by water. Follow the path to a fork.

(3) The route takes a small path on the right and joins a wider track. Turn left until you reach an observation tower overlooking the wastewater treatment plant and the “Zone Libellule”. See the “during the hike” section.

(4) Turn back to the previous fork.

(3) Take the path on your left which leads through a pine forest. * See section: during the hike.
Follow this path until you return to the treetop adventure park, cross a bridge over the Ruisseau d'Andron and return to the original fork.

(1) Head straight ahead to return to the car park on the beach road (S/E).

Worth a visit

A green ecological area located downstream of the water treatment plant, designed to improve water filtration through the use of plants. This area prevents direct discharge into the Eyre (or Leyre). Information boards explain the process.

In the past, resin tappers worked in this forest: they would make incisions in the pine trunks, placing a pot beneath the cut to collect the resin the tree produced to heal itself. This resin was used to make paint and varnish, rubber, perfumes and soaps, cleaning products, medicines, etc.

It was quite busy at the start (tree-top adventure course, children’s play area), then there was no one else around, apart from the kayaks.
It was tricky to find the start of the walk, which is quite a way from the end of Allée de la Plage. I went too far to the right and ended up doing the route in the wrong direction. But I found the GR trail along the river. So no problem.

An ideal route for children: easy, with activities and a snack at the start (or at the end as a reward). It may be a bit tricky for pushchairs as the vegetation is dense and the path is narrow in places, and the ground is a bit uneven too.

The start of the circular route is hard to find.
At the start and finish, if you’re looking for peace and quiet, avoid Wednesdays, which are very busy with children.
The walk is very pleasant and suitable for all abilities; completed in June 2024
Our dog was delighted too.

A very pleasant, shaded and easy walk through the forest. Not suitable for pushchairs, so we used a baby carrier.
Great for our dog too

It’s quite busy at the start because of the tree-top adventure course

The site is flooded today, so the route is impassable – a shame, as I wanted to take my daughter Thalia (aged 10) on her first hike 😔
