Park in the municipal swimming pool car park.
(S/E) Cross the road and take the path that goes round the back of the swimming pool. Walk alongside the pool and soon leave the wide path for a narrow, downhill track to the left. Continue through the pine forest to the recently restored railway bridge.
(1) Go under the bridge and follow the tarmac path. The River Connes flows below on your left. Continue gently downhill to reach the bridge spanning the Rivière du Pont Brignet.
(2) Just after the bridge, turn right onto the very steep path. Pass the houses of Mathivet on your right. Walk through the hamlet of Brin (very narrow cobbled streets).
(3) At the road, turn right and follow it as it bends to the left. After the houses, the road becomes a track and climbs to a crossroads: the Carrefour de Clapeyrol.
(4) You may choose not to make the return trip to the Grotte des Baumes, which would shorten the route by 2.8 km, or about an hour’s walk.
At the junction, take thesecond path on the left towards the cave. Cross the Puech and rejoin the road after two hairpin bends. At the left-hand bend, follow the path on the right.
From this point up to the first bend in the path, forestry work has made the path very cluttered (September 2021)
At the right-hand bend: continue straight on down a path, then at the crossroads (signpost) turn left: the cave is 200 m away.
(5) From the cave, retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there, taking care to turn left at a Fork in the road to rejoin the road, then head towards Le Puech and finally the Clapeyrol crossroads.
(4) Continue straight ahead along the wide path. At the Fork in the road, follow the path on the right.
(6) At the bottom of a descent, in a right-hand bend, take the path on the left. Cross the Valat des Aigres Jayres (a small stream which was dry).
(7) Once you reach the stream bed, take a small path just to the right of a property entrance. Then wade across the Rivière du Pont Brignet and head back up to the railway bridge. Turn left just after the bridge.
(8) Follow the path, pass through Besou, then turn left onto the road leading to the swimming pool car park (S/E).
