Combourg Lake, the Étang des Mufins and the Haute Boissière

A route mainly on land. It will take you past Combourg’s two main bodies of water, the lake and the Étang des Maffins. Then, after passing through the La Croix Briand housing estate, it will take you to La Haute Boissière via a charming little sunken path. This spot is situated on a small hill about 80 metres above sea level, offering a lovely panoramic view of Combourg and the surrounding area in fine weather.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the pond car park, head towards the pond until you reach a Fork in the road.

(1) Follow the southern bank to the right. After just over 500 metres, take the fairly wide path on the right. When you reach the road, turn left and pass the farmhouse on your left.

(2) Continue left along the small country road which climbs up to a housing estate. Take the first street on the right, Rue Rivallon. At the end of the street, turn left and take a narrow passageway to join Avenue Gautier Père et Fils (D794).

(3) Turn right onto it, then take the first road on the left. Continue straight ahead along the track, pass through the small tunnel, and carry on to the railway bridge.

(4) Go under the bridge and leave the road on the right to join the footpath.

(5) At the crossroads, take the path on the other side of the road through the woodland.

(6) At the Fork in the road, take the path on the right. When you reach the road, turn left, pass La Haute Boissiére and take the path on the left to return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(6) Follow the path back until you reach the farmhouse you passed on the way out.

(2) Carry on straight ahead, then follow the pond on the right-hand side (north side), staying on the path.

(1) Turn right at the junction you passed on the way out.

(S/E) Walk past the car park, cross the road and continue to the right along the path that runs alongside it. Keep following the path to the left until you reach the lakeside.

(7) Walk past the gazebo and, after about fifty metres, take the small path on the right. The path winds its way between the houses and leads to a small square. Turn left, walk under the archway and past the Maison du Pendu.

(8) Follow the street with the castle on your right, then turn left to reach the lake again. Walk along the lake and turn left at the first road. Follow it along the path that runs alongside it.

(9) Turn left into the park and stay on the path under the trees, keeping to the left. At the sports ground, turn left to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Worth a visit

Castle A
medieval fortress built betweenthe 12th and15th centuries, Combourg Castle tells the story of Brittany from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The Maison du Pendu (8)

This16th-century Gothic-style mansion features an octagonal stair turret. According to tradition, the Maison du Pendu takes its name from a fratricidal feud: two gentlemen, both in love with the young woman living within these walls, fought a duel; one lost his life, the other an eye. The survivor, unable to bear the remorse, is said to have hanged himself above the lady’s door.

The Maison de la Lanterne
A former private mansion, it was built in 1597 on the site of a fortified house where Duguesclin once stayed. The names of successive owners are engraved on the lintel of the façade.

The Relais des Princes
One of the last half-timbered houses built in Combourg in the16th century, it was an important coaching inn at the crossroads of the royal roads from Fougères to Dinan and from Saint-Malo to Rennes.

The Lac Tranquille Gazebo ( 7)
An unusual structure situated on the northern shore of the lake, the gazebo is a hexagonal building constructed in the late 19th century. Whether it served as a hunting lodge or a nature observatory, its precise function remains unclear.
