The Jas de Baylet

This route, in the shadow of Puy de Naouri, takes you across the Jas de Baylé plateau through an arid landscape composed of limestone rocks, which are responsible for the aridity of these places. Superb panoramic views of the coastline, the Estérel massif, the Baous and the Alps.

Description of the walk

Park along Chemin de l'Ormée.

(S/E) Head towards marker 110, which is located at the side of the road.

Yellow markings

(1) Turn left towards Col de Vence and follow the path through a few properties to marker 111.

(2) Continue along Chemin de Salles, an uphill tarmac road, towards Col de Vence. This pleasant little road through the forest requires caution as there is road traffic.

(3) Leave Chemin de Salles at this bend and continue straight ahead on the dead-end road that ends at a path, the start of which is marked by marker 112. Continue towards Col de Vence until you reach marker 113.

GR®51 White and Red Markings

(4) Keep to the right, heading towards Col de Vence.

(5) Immediately after the 90° right-hand bend, take the path on the left, temporarily leaving the GR® markings. You will quickly rejoin them and arrive at a crossroads.

(6) Continue straight ahead, following the GR® markings, until you reach marker 136.

No markings

(7) Turn right, heading south, onto this track suitable for vehicles, which crosses arid terrain, and continue until you reach a wayside shrine.

(8) Leave the track and take the path on the right: after about 70 metres, you will see one of the most beautiful drystone shelters in the region, a sign of a pastoral past. Continue towards the summit, occupied by a corral, a circular stone enclosure, formerly used as a sheep pen.

(9) From here, head left, due east, and descend through the low vegetation to rejoin the track, which you follow to the right until the next Y-junction, marked by a cairn.

(10) Turn right to reach the ridge, which offers beautiful views of the coastline and the Estérel. At this point, turn left to follow the ridge:the path sometimes disappears into the vegetation for a few metres. You will reach a crossroads marked by a cairn.

(11) Head right and follow the track to the next junction, located just before a small bend and marked by two cairns: beautiful views of the Baou des Blancs.

(12) Turn left and follow the descending track to Route de Coursegoules (M2), locally known as Route du Col de Vence.

(13) Turn right onto this downhill section of road. Please note that there is no pavement. Walk carefully along this tarmac road and increase your safety by wearing a yellow vest. Continue to marker 129.

(14) Take the path on the left that starts from the small car park. At the next crossroads, turn right to rejoin Route de Coursegoules.

(15) Cross it carefully, turn left for about 50 metres and then take the path on the right that runs parallel to the road, which starts just after a large iron gate: marker 128. Follow the signs for La Foux - Vence.

(16) Turn right just before the large stone building and head towards the bridge below. Then turn left onto Chemin de la Source. Be careful of traffic until you reach your destination.

(17) Turn left onto the downhill road called Chemin des Salles. Continue to the fountain.

(18) Turn right onto Chemin de l'Ormée to return to the initial crossroads.

(1) Continue straight ahead to reach the car park (S/E).

It is best to park at the end of the cul-de-sac, at the start of the trail marked by signpost 112, Chemin de l'Ormée, which only has two parking spaces. Much of the hike is no longer marked, and Viso Rando prevented us from getting lost and "spending the night" in the wilderness. We enjoyed the magnificent view of the coastline and the Esterel. Be careful on the way back, walking along the edge of the Col de Vence road.

A lovely route above Vence offering beautiful views. No difficulty. Take care at the end of the route when you join the road, as there is quite a lot of traffic and the verges are narrow.
