The Honneck as seen from Lake Retournemer

The Hohneck is one of the must-see peaks in the Vosges. This peak is directly accessible by car. It is also possible to climb it via the paths that start at the bottom of the surrounding valleys. This hike takes you from the La Bresse ski resort to the Hohneck, in a circular fashion, before returning via the Roche du Diable, Lac de Retournemer and the Cascade Charlemagne. The walk is not particularly difficult, but does involve a significant climb, rewarded by splendid panoramic views on the upper section of the route, and several sections on the descent to Lac de Retournemer that require caution.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park to the north of the ski resort

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the roundabout.

Blue Ring signposting

Take the first exit onto the Chemin du Bas Chitelet towards Hohneck. Then keep to the right to gradually climb above the ski resort. At the ski run, continue straight ahead along a steeply sloping track. Ignore all paths to the left and right and pass in front of a water treatment plant to reach the foot of the Lac de la Lande dam.

(1) Just at the foot of the dam, take the path on the left, which winds upwards before joining a wider track; follow this to the right towards the lake. Continue along the track on the left as you reach the lake until you come to a Fork in the road.

Red Ring markings

Carry on to the right to walk along the lake. Pass a mountain bike track on your left.

Blue Ring markings

(2) At the junction at the end of the lake, continue to the left and keep left again on the track until the next Fork in the road. Turn right towards the Hohneck before continuing along the small path to the left, which leads up to the chairlift.

(3) When you reach the chairlift, turn right and go round the top station on the right. Head down slightly before climbing back up the track on the right to the small road.

(4) Follow this road to the left to reach the Route des Crêtes.

(5) Cross the road carefully before following it to the left and then turning right onto the access road to the Hohneck. Take the first path on the right and head for a pass.

(6) Then set off along the path that winds upwards to the left to the Hohneck.

(7) Once at the summit, walk round the inn on the right to find the car park.

Red Rectangle markings

From the car park, take the wide path heading to the right, go round two bends, ignore a Fork in the road and reach the Col de Falimont.

Red Disc markings

(8) Take the third path on the left towards Le Collet and head for the Route des Crêtes.

(9) Cross very carefully to take the path opposite, still heading towards Le Collet. Pass all the forks in the road to the right and left to reach the hamlet.

Blue Disc markings

(10) Cross this dangerous junction with care and take the path which starts with a very steep slope towards Haut Gazon and Gérardmer. At the Fork in the road, keep to the right, then, almost at the top of the climb, keep to the right again to emerge onto the scree slope of Haut Gazon.

(11) Follow the path to a junction. Stay on the track leading down opposite before reaching Balveurche.

(12) Turn left, walk past the building and, once at the end, turn right onto the path towards Gérardmer. You will then come to a large crossroads.

(13) Keep left onto Chemin Ingold. Ignore a muddy, sloping path on the left to reach the Col de Malakoff.

Marked with Yellow Discs

(14) Turn left towards La Roche du Diable. Caution for those prone to vertigo: the path gradually becomes narrower and more technical as the descent continues. You’ll reach the D417.

(15) Turn right and follow the road for a few hundred metres , taking great care as it is very busy.

No signposting

Leave the path on the left for later and, at the tunnel, take the path on the left towards La Roche du Diable.

(16) Return to the road and follow it to the right until you reach the path.

Marked with Yellow Discs

Turn right onto this path, then right again at the junction. The path is very steep and technical: take care. At the Fork in the road, continue to the left and reach the bottom of the descent. Pass a faint fork, then head left and then right to rejoin the road and Lac de Retournemer.

Red Cross markings

(17) Cross the road and turn right. Then take the path between the safety barrier and the lake to reach the old Retournemer railway tunnel.

(18) Pass through the tunnel and, immediately afterwards, turn left towards the waterfall. Pass a junction on the right to reach the waterfall.

(19) Carry on straight ahead and cross the footbridge on the right to rejoin a track. Follow this to the left, skirting the lake, until you reach a junction on the right.

(20) Carry on straight ahead to the road, crossing a stream.

Red Triangle signposting

(21) Turn right towards the Cascade Charlemagne. At the houses, turn sharply left and enter the forest. Cross the road carefully and keep to the stream at all times to reach the Cascade Charlemagne.

(22) Return to the road, cross it, then turn right at the houses.

Red Cross signposting

(21) At the fork in the road, take the left-hand path. Cross the stream and continue to the ‘right of way’ sign. Carry on for a few metres until you reach the next fork in the road.

Blue Ring signpost

(20) Turn left onto a path that runs alongside a stream, or even crosses it. At the junction, keep straight ahead and head for the Col des Feignes sous Vologne.

(23) Head to the other side of the pass.

Red Saltire signpost

Take the track on the right before following the path to the left. At the junction, take the path straight ahead, slightly to the left, and walk alongside a pond, then a second one. Pass a faint path on the left and reach a junction.

Blue Ring markings

(24) Turn left and, at the end, reach the road. Turn right, cross the roundabout carefully and return to the car park (S/E).
