Blanchemer and Altenweiher lakes route

A superb hike to do in summer when it's very hot. Three quarters of the route is shaded.
These two glacial lakes are magnificent.

Description of the walk

Parking access: from La Bresse, head towards the Le Slalom ski resort on the D34.
After 5 km, turn right onto a small tarmac road, the Chemin de Blanchemer, and after one kilometre you will reach one of the two car parks at Lac de Blanchemer.

Initial remark: good footwear recommended.
The GPS track is sometimes unreliable, especially when descending towards Lac d'Altenweiher. Follow the signposts.

(S/E) Take a wide path around the lake on the right until you reach a crossroads with several paths.

(1) A small path (marked with a blue triangle) climbs steeply. Follow it until you reach a wide path called Chemin du Grand Bougre. Continue left on this path for 450 metres. Take the small path on the right (blue triangle) which climbs steeply.

(2) At the crossroads, turn right to reach a tarmac road (Route des Crêtes), cross it and reach the small pass of Rainkopf.

(3) Take the path heading south.

Yellow signpost

During the descent, a viewpoint offers a magnificent view of the lake.
At a crossroads, leave the path that heads right towards Steinwasen and continue on the left.

(4) At Lake Altenweiher, cross the dam and take a path heading east that climbs steadily to point 1226 (viewpoint over the lake during the ascent).

Blue rectangle markings

(5) Turn sharply left and follow theGR®531(blue rectangle markings) to the Rainkopf Refuge.

(6) Continue to small pass du Rainkopf.

(3) Retrace your steps by crossing the road and returning to the intersection you passed on the way up.

(2) Leave the uphill path on your left and continue straight ahead on the path that descends northwards to a tarmac road.

(7) Descend sharply to the left (a small path runs alongside the road).

Yellow disc markings

(8) Leave the road and descend towards the lake and the car park (S/E).

Notes

Bring water for the day.
At (4), you can leave the route and continue on to the Auberge du Kastelberg.
At (5), you can see the Auberge de la Chaume de Firstmiss below.

Worth a visit

(1) Lac de Blanchemer at an altitude of 980 m. Area: 9 ha. Depth: 15 m.
In winter, the snow reflects in the lake, hence the name Mer Blanche (White Sea).
It is a glacial cirque resting on a moraine. It supplies electricity to La Bresse.
Natural floating rafts made of peat and sphagnum moss occupy part of the lake.

(4) Lake Altenweiher: old pond 920 m above sea level. Area 7.7 ha. Depth 15 m.
It is a glacial cirque of 70,000 m³. A very beautiful place for a picnic.

We set off from the Blanchemer bridge as the road to the lake is still closed for the winter. (Follow the Blue Triangle markings to the lake: a magnificent trail of around 1.5 km!)
Towards the end, turn left at the signpost for Lake Blanchemer to avoid having to return via the road (which is of little interest)
In any case, a magnificent hike! A bit of a workout on the descent to Altenweiher.
And the remaining snow added a lovely little bonus!

A very beautiful hike done on a sunny Sunday, so there were quite a few people. Physically quite easy because the elevation gain is done in two stages. A few short sections are a little steep, but nothing too difficult. The trail is very beautiful. In some places, it is a little narrow for walking with young children. The two lakes are very pleasant.

A beautiful hike with stunning panoramic views
along the ridge road. Please note that there is a difficult section due to a fallen tree on the path between points 3 and 4.

An excellent, peaceful route in the Vosges, with different types of trails. The weather wasn't great, but that didn't detract from the charm of this route. Thank you.
A small note: before point 7, a few metres higher up, there seems to be a path that branches off to the left and leads directly down to Lake Blanchemer in 20 minutes (there is a sign indicating this). We didn't try it because it started to rain and we didn't want to venture out in that weather. But I think it's worth a try because it's probably nicer than the road...
In any case, well done for this suggestion.

A very beautiful hike done with an 8-year-old child. No major difficulties. The two lakes are splendid.
The route was shaded despite the heat, which meant we didn't sweat too much on the climbs.
We'll definitely be back!
Thank you.

A beautiful, shaded hike with a reasonable elevation gain, but not recommended for small children. Discovering the two glacial lakes on a warm summer's day provides a welcome respite from the heat.
