Mont Valérien and old Nanterre

An urban route with some elevation changes, crossing wooded parks and residential areas in old Nanterre. Along the way, there are numerous views of Paris and the large housing estates of the Val de Seine, a memorial at Fort du Mont Valérien, an old windmill and an old barn.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: La Petite Couronne de Paris

Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Suresnes Mont Valérien station.
- Transilien - Line L, on the section between Paris-Saint-Lazare and Versailles-Rive-Droite or Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche.
- Transilien - Line U, between La Défense and La Verrière.
Take the Mot Valérien exit.
For departure from the tram (line T2), see an alternative route in the practical information section.

Yellow markings

(S) When leaving the station, turn right. Cross over a boulevard on your right and, at the fork (opposite no. 2 bis), turn left onto Rue du Fécheray. At Rue de Bellevue, turn left and climb the stairs at the foot of the high retaining wall of the Terrasse du Fécheray. At the top, turn right at the hairpin bend to reach the corner of the terrace (viewpoint). Turn left and continue along the edge of the terrace with the railing on your right. Note the American military cemetery on your left, on the other side of the boulevard.

Leave the terrace by going through a gate (city map). Cross Rue du Fécheray on the right-hand side and walk along Boulevard Washington on your left. At the first traffic lights, turn left and cross the boulevard. Then cross Avenue du Colonel Hubert Delestrée and turn right. Before a gate, turn left, go through the chicane at the entrance to Chemin des Poneys, climb a series of steps and finish with a second chicane.

Yellow + green markings

(1) Turn left, heading south, onto a cement path (ignore the markings that tell you to go straight ahead). Walk along the ditch and the east wing of the fort on your right and descend slightly. Cross the road leading to the military fort and continue to the right on Promenade Jacques Baumel (concrete path between two hedges). Walk along the ditch and the east wing of the fort again and, at the corner, turn right onto the path. You will come out onto the esplanade of the Mémorial de la France combattante.

(2) Cross the esplanade and take the cement path opposite, which starts to the left of the steps, still on Promenade Jacques Baumel. Enter the park of the same name through a gate. After a few dozen metres, turn right and go down a cement path.

No markings

At the bottom, ignore a path coming from the left and then a concrete path leading off to the right. At the fork that immediately appears, follow the fitness trail to the right. At the next junction, turn left and walk past some benches and an information panel. At the next junction (marker no. 16), turn left again onto a gravel path. At the next fork, turn right onto a tarmac path and walk along a fence on your right. At the next fork (marker no. 6), turn left and go down two successive staircases. Go down a concrete path and, when another path comes from the left, turn right. Leave the park via entrance no. 6.

Yellow markings

(3) Turn left, pass in front of the crematorium and descend along the cemetery on both sides. Cross Rue des Cendres on the left and continue straight ahead. At the junction with Rue des Ermites, turn left. At the next junction, turn left and follow Rue de Garches, preferably on the right-hand pavement. After about 50 metres, turn right into Rue Jean Moulin. Turn left with the street, pass a chicane and cross a residential area.

At the end, turn right onto Rue des Chailliers. At the traffic lights, follow Rue de Buezenval to the left. At the roundabout, take the first right onto Rue de Saint-Cloud (ignore the arrow pointing to the left, there are twoPR® trails here). You will arrive at the foot of an old windmill (information panel).

No signposts

(4) Continue straight ahead downhill (ignore the signpost on the left). You will come to Rue des Chailliers on your right. Continue straight ahead and cross Rue Charcot at the traffic lights. At the next crossroads, turn left onto Rue des Ombraies.

At the corner of No. 22, turn right into Passage des Suisses. Follow the path between the walls and garden fences and, at the end, turn left. At the next crossroads, turn right onto Rue des Vignes. At the traffic lights, cross Avenue du Maréchal Joffre and continue straight ahead onto Rue Sainte-Geneviève.

(5) At the crossroads, turn right onto Rue de la Croix. Note the motto of our republic written in various languages on the wall of the school on the right-hand side. Cross Avenue Lénine (the pedestrian crossing is on the right), continue along Rue de la Croix and continue along the passage of the same name. At the end, turn left at an acute angle. At the next intersection (old house on the corner), turn right onto Rue du Castel Marly.

After about 75 metres, cross Place du Castel Marly to the left. After the bollards, turn right into an alleyway and go under a porch. At the exit, first turn right then left, passing between a bakery on the left and a bank on the right. At the next fork, follow Rue Maurice Thorez to the right. Take the first right, Rue de l'Église, and walk along the Sainte-Geneviève Cathedral on your left. At the crossroads, turn left onto Rue des Anciennes Maries.

(6) At the crossroads, turn left into Parc des Anciennes Mairies and veer right towards the open-air theatre. At the fork (Bardet stele), turn left and, a few metres later, turn right. Ignore a turn-off on the right and pass between two ponds. Turn right at the foot of the war memorial, then turn left to exit the park (yellow marker).

Cross the street and follow it to the left for a few dozen metres. Turn right onto Rue du Docteur Foucault. At the next intersection, the street becomes cobbled and curves to the right: follow it, crossing Rue Francisque Sarcey on the left, then Rue Montpréau.

At the crossroads (note the monumental gate of an old barn opposite on the right-hand side), turn left onto Passage Quignon. At the end, turn right onto Boulevard du Couchant. At the traffic lights, cross Rue de Stalingrad and continue along the boulevard. You will soon see Nanterre-Ville station on your left (E).

To return home:
- RER - Line A, towards Paris or Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Alternative starting point:
Depart from the Suresnes-Longchamp tram station (line T2) - Refer to the "Le Val de Seine between Saint-Cloud and Suresnes" hike sheet. Follow the route of this hike from point (6). When you arrive at Suresnes-Mont Valérien station, turn left onto Rue du Calvaire. Take the bridge over the railway line and immediately turn right onto Rue Guillaume Lenoir. Ignore the entrance to the station on the right and continue to the car park. At the end of the car park, on the left, take the "Villas de la Station" path, go slightly downhill and rejoin the route of this hike at its starting point. This alternative route is about 500 metres longer.
N.B. If you have a Navigo pass, you can also enter the station and take the underground passage that leads to the Mont Valérien exit.

This hike was completed twice by the author, the first time on 21 November 2015 and the second time on 14 February 2018.

Worth a visit

Numerous views of Paris (Montmartre, Eiffel Tower, Dôme des Invalides, Front de Seine, Bois de Boulogne, etc.), La Défense and the large housing estates of Boulogne-Billancourt and Meudon.

The Fort du Mont Valérien. Built in 1846, it played an important military role in 1870-1871. During the Second World War, it was the site of the execution of more than a thousand resistance fighters. A memorial to the Fighting France has been erected on its southern flank, and an American military cemetery (First World War) covers its eastern flank.
- For more information, see the official Mont Valérien website.
- To book a guided tour (free of charge): see the "Book your visit" page on this website.

- Moulin des Gibets (4).
- Beautiful houses in old Nanterre.
- Parc des Anciennes Mairies (6).
- Old barn after the intersection between Rue du Docteur Foucault and Passage Quignon.

A pleasant walk in glorious sunshine, especially the first part with beautiful views of Paris and Mont Valérien. So I'm going back tomorrow for a guided tour of the fort.

Superb view of Mont Valérien. Route best done in good weather.
The end of the hike in old Nanterre is less interesting.

Hello,
Once again, a very good and detailed guide.
Contrary to the comments we had seen, everything on this hike was accessible. The terrace is not private and offers a view that is not to be missed.
Unfortunately for us, due to weather conditions, Mont Valérien Park was closed (which is unusual). So we walked along it and came across an educational farm that opens on the third Sunday of every month from 2 p.m., which was the case that Sunday, so we were in luck. For those who would like to see rabbits, cows, donkeys, goats, sheep, farmyard animals and a very endearing and cuddly pig named Réglisse, I recommend taking a little detour to Mont Valérien to have a look ;-)

A lovely first part around Mont Valérien (it's a shame that the Fecheray terrace is no longer accessible), but the second part through Nanterre is much less interesting...

Hello Skocoleuro, and thank you for your comments.

With all these changes and restricted access, I understand why you were disappointed! I will have to look into alternative routes.

I was a little disappointed by this hike. You can't access the Fecheray terrace, which has been privatised, so you have to climb up the street that runs alongside it at the foot of the wall. Once you reach the top of the hill, contrary to what I had hoped, there is unfortunately no view of Paris or La Défense (perhaps worth trying again in winter), just a view of Rueil and La Celle St Cloud at one point. In Nanterre, the pavements are not always passable due to cars parked on them. In 3, there is no roundabout at the intersection of Rue de Buzenval and Rue de Saint Cloud, just a standard crossroads. In 6, the stele is named after Barbet (not Bardet). Access to Rue Maurice Thorez from the Parc de l'Ancienne Mairie is closed, which means you have to retrace your steps.

A pleasant route through greenery and urban landscapes.
Beautiful views of Paris and La Défense.
The small town centre of Nanterre is worth exploring: old buildings, cathedral, shopping centre, etc.
Takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes at a brisk pace.

Hello Ctbs, thank you for your comments and feedback.

Could you specify exactly where the fallen trees are located and how you managed to get around the obstacle? Thank you in advance.

We were unable to follow the route exactly. Part of it near Mont Valérien is closed due to fallen trees. Beautiful view of Paris.
