Off the beaten track
(S) After the turnstiles, go down the stairs towards “Rue Dailly / Hôpital” at the exit of the underpass, cross at the traffic lights and walk down Avenue Charles Lauer between the two hospital buildings.
Red and white signposting (GR®1)
(1) Turn right onto Place de Silly. At the Fork in the road, continue right onto Rue des Écoles, then straight on until you reach the entrance to Parc de Saint Cloud.
(2) Take the concrete path on the right (ignore the markings at this point). At the top, turn right behind the wooden fence, then immediately left to enter the Trocadéro gardens. At the Fork in the road, keep left. Go straight on until you reach a rotunda facing a pond. Then turn right, then near the boundary wall, turn left at the Fork in the road (ignore the markings on the ground at this point). Then turn right to leave the garden. Continue to the right along a wide path until you reach a car park.
(3) Turn left, then left again along the tarmac path, until you reach the Pavillon des 24 Jets. Turn right, go through the gates at the foot of a lion sculpture. Turn left, then left again along the tarmac path, until you reach the Pavillon des 24 Jets. Turn right, go through the gates at the foot of the lion statue.
Off the marked route
(4) Take the second path on the left and go down a flight of steps to reach the Orangery Terrace. Go down a second flight of steps to reach the Château Terrace (site map showing the old château). Continue to the balustrade (information panels).
(5) With your back to Paris and the Seine, head left and turn immediately right to go back up a path parallel to the one you took on the way there. Take the Allée des Goulottes and pass the Bassin aux Chiens to reach the upper grassy terrace (statues). Turn left into the descending path and head for the Parterre de la Lyre.
Red and white markings (GR®)
(6) Turn left and walk along the lawn on your right. Go through a gate and continue straight on to the foot of the grassy slope of the Fer à Cheval.
Off the marked trail
(7) Take the path climbing to the right and follow the lawn on your left. Just before a balustrade, turn right into the undergrowth. At the next junction, turn left. Cross the Allée de Chartres in two stages, then, again in two stages, the Allée de la Lanterne.
Red and white markings (GR®)
(8) Enter the woods and, at the first Fork in the road, veer to the right. At the next junction, go straight on.
No markings
(9) At the next junction, turn left into Allée de la Félicité and walk along a lawn on your right. You’ll come out onto Rond de la Broussaille; go round it on the right until you reach the edge of the woods. Enter the woods via the path that slopes gently down to the right to reach a junction.
Yellow markings (PR®)
Follow the marked path as it continues (westwards).
(10) Take the first path on the left and leave the park via the Grille Brancas. Walk down a street and soon turn right into Rue des Fontenelles. Stay on this winding street and ignore a narrow lane and a dead-end on the left.
(11) Take Rue du Point de Vue on the right. At the end, turn left into Rue des Soupirais. Then turn right onto the viaduct crossing the railway line. On the other side, turn left and go straight on to Sèvres-Ville-d’Avray station.
(12) Cross the square to reach Rue des Jardies on the right. At the end, head down Avenue Gambetta to the left until you reach the pedestrian crossing. Turn right to cross the avenue and enter Parc de Lesser. Cross the park to exit onto Rue de Sèvres. Then turn right twice to take Rue Jules Poussin. At the junction, turn left onto Avenue de Balzac. At the end, follow Rue de Saint-Cloud (D985) to the left. At the crossroads, cross Rue de Sèvres (D407) to reach the foot of the church in Ville-d’Avray.
(13) Head towards the war memorial and go round it on the right. Join the Mail du Docteur Bosvieux and follow it to the right, passing a playground on your left. Cross Rue de la Ronce and continue along the Mail Lemerre. Walk past the house of the painter Corot, go through a stone gate and arrive at the foot of the statue of Corot and the banks of the Étangs de Ville-d'Avray.
Red and yellow markings (GRP®)
(14) Walk along the first pond on your left. At the end, make the first turn right then left to walk along the second pond, still on your left. Turn left with the path and cross a stream. You’ll come out onto a wide path; follow it to the right.
(15) At the junction, turn left and head steeply uphill. At the first junction, turn right. Follow the signposted path heading south-west and ignore the numerous side paths. At a junction, follow a wide path to the right to reach the Carrefour des Bassins.
(16) Then take the second path on the left (south-south-west). At the corner of plot 93, before the path narrows, turn right onto the GRP®. Follow this narrow path as it gradually curves to the right, ignoring all the side paths. This will take you to the Carrefour de la Descente.
(17) Turn left and cross the D985 at the pedestrian crossing on the left. Take the path that climbs up on the other side of the road. Continue straight ahead (west-north-west), climbing gently at first and then more steeply. You will reach the Carrefour de la Porte Verte on the edge of the D182 (entrance to Versailles).
(18) Go round the junction on the left, using the successive pedestrian crossings. Turn right, cross two parallel avenues and take the Chemin de la Brèche (north) to enter the forest. Ignore a path coming from the left and, at the next junction, turn left. At the next junction, turn right and pass a sports ground on your left. Ignore a path branching off to the left, head uphill and reach a T-junction. Then turn left and head back down to a roundabout.
(19) Go round the roundabout on the right and cross the Route de Rueil (D173). Then take the first path on the right and enter the forest again. At the next two junctions, continue straight ahead. At the next junction, turn right. At the T-junction, turn left and you will soon come out onto the D173.
(20) Follow the road to the left and go under the motorway bridge. Further on, cross Route Napoléon III (D184) and continue along the path opposite. Take the first path on the right and go straight on until you reach the Route de la Chasse Royale (bus stop). Cross it and follow it to the left on the right-hand pavement. Join the pavement opposite and take it to the left. At the traffic lights, cross the Boulevard de la République then turn left to cross the Route de la Chasse Royale again.
Red and white markings (GR®) + Red and yellow markings (GRP®)
(21) Turn right and immediately take the first path on the left. Continue straight ahead (north-north-west) and cross a railway line (visible only on the left-hand side, at the tunnel exit). Turn left then right to reach the esplanade opposite the Pavillon du Butard (picnic area available).
(22) Head down the first path on the left after the pavilion.
(23) At a junction, you can reach La-Celle-Saint-Cloud station via the path that descends to the left and leads to the station car park. Otherwise, continue straight on with the GR®. At the Fork in the road shortly afterwards, turn left then continue straight on.
GR® (red and white markings)
(24) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the GR®. Pass the first path coming from the right and, at the next junction, turn left. Cross Avenue Charles de Gaulle (D128) via the pedestrian crossing on the left. Walk down Avenue Gustave Mesureur until you reach a junction with traffic lights.
(25) Cross the D321 (Avenue Jean Moulin) at the pedestrian crossing on the right. On the other side, follow the avenue to the left and shortly afterwards turn right into the Sentier des Brangères, at the corner of a restaurant. You will come out onto Avenue de l’Abreuvoir and follow it as it continues. At the end, first turn left then right to go under the railway line. Continue uphill opposite along Grande Rue. At the T-junction, turn right, still on Grande Rue. Turn left onto this road, go uphill and ignore two other streets on the right.
(26) At the T-junction, continue straight on along a path that enters the forest. Follow a fence and, just after a small house, turn right. Continue straight on, keeping an orchard on your left. At the first junction, turn left. At the second junction, turn left again. Go round the orchards (the path continues by turning left twice).
Unmarked
(27) At the corner of plot 225, take a wide, raised path on the right. At the next junction, go straight on until you reach the fence of Marshal Joffre’s former estate (which houses his mausoleum). Turn left along the fence.
Red and white markings (GR®)
(28) You will come out onto a tarmac road, the Chemin des Gressets, and follow it to the right. You will come out onto Rue du Maréchal Joffre and follow it to the left until you reach Route de Versailles (N186). Cross the four-lane road in two stages, then follow it to the left along a wall.
(29) Pass through the Grille des Deux Portes and enter the Parc de Marly via a small tarmac road (no traffic). At a Fork in the road, turn right.
No signposting
Let the GR® head off to the right onto a path and stay on the road. At the junction, turn right and reach a beautiful viewpoint at the top of the Tapis Vert (a vast lawn).
(30) Head down the path on the right, keeping the lawn on your left. Go round the pond (Rondeau du Grand Jet) on the right until you reach the junction with the Route de la Grille Royale (site of the old castle on the left / climb up towards the gate on the right).
(31) Continue straight ahead, then take the first path on the left, which runs some distance from the Bassin du Grand Miroir. At the next junction, turn left, then immediately right. Go round the grassy "roundabout" on the left, taking thefirst exit. Turn left to walk along the boundary wall, then left again along the terrace, above the drinking trough basin. Pass the Marly horse statues. Walk up the other side along the boundary wall to the Porte du Roi.
(32) Leave the park via the Porte des Impressionnistes, cross the D7 at the traffic lights and continue straight on along the Grande Rue. At the corner of No. 23, turn right and go under a portico. Enter the Jardin Maillol and cross it to reach Rue Mansart. Follow this road to the left, cross a main road and arrive at the foot of the town hall.
(33) Go round the side of the building to the right via a flight of steps. Turn right to enter the Parc du Chenil (arboretum). Follow Allée Mary Sol Boyer, then turn left to leave the park opposite the Schweitzer nursery school. Turn right, then immediately left into Allée du 8 mai 1945. Walk alongside the cemetery on your right and, at the corner, turn right to reach Marly-le-Roi station (Transilien line L) (E).
