The Fort of Saint-Père-Marc-en-Poulet

Built in the 18th century, the fort completes the coastal fortifications designed by Vauban to protect the bay of Saint-Malo from English attacks. With a capacity of 3,000 men, 26 casemates and a 46-metre-long powder magazine, it was delivered too late to play a defensive role. During the 1914-1918 war, it housed German prisoners and, during the last war, it was converted into an ammunition depot by the Germans, who blew up part of the casemates during their evacuation. Decommissioned in 1988, it is now owned by the municipality of Saint-Père-Marc-en-Poulet, which has restored it; shows are organised there.

Description of the walk

Parking spaces around the town hall and the church.

(S/E) Take Rue Vauban at the corner of the church and, after 200 m, turn onto the path on the right.

(1) This tarmac path runs alongside houses (Allée de Namurin) before turning into a wide grassy track. Continue straight on until you see the Malouinière Launay-Ravily on your right, which is not open to visitors (built in 1732; listed as a historic monument).

(2) Continue along the path, passing another access road to the Malouinière once more, and carry on to the end of the path.

(3) Turn left onto this road which runs through the fields. At the next junction, turn right towards the fort.

(4) Make sure you spot the path on the right, which marks the start of the tour of the fortifications (do not continue towards the car parks). A sign indicates the entrance to the path. Complete the full circuit

(5) Leave the fort grounds and take the road leading down towards the D74.
At the junction, cross the road – be careful as there is heavy traffic – and take the road opposite until you reach the bend.

(6) Leave the road and take a wide path on the left that runs alongside the fields and leads to a road.

::7: Continue left along the road, skirting the ponds, and emerge at the junction with the D74 and D76.

(8) Cross the road – heavy traffic. Continue straight on along the D74, using the footpath 100 metres past the town entrance sign (on the rugby stadium side); arrive at Saint-Père-Marc-en-Poulet at the junction from the outward journey.

(1) Continue straight on to the car park around the town hall and the church (S/E).

Worth a visit

Le Clos Poulet: Poulet comes from the Latin contraction of "pagus" and "Alet" (the land of Aleth);
Clos: identifies the settlement protected behind high walls.
Clos Poulet corresponds to the territory formed: to the north by Saint-Malo, to the east by Cancale-La Baie du Mont Saint-Michel, and to the west by the right bank of the Rance.
In the 18th century, wealthy residents of Saint-Malo built their second homes, known as Malouinières, within the perimeter of Clos Poulet.

The Fort of Saint-Père-Marc-en-Poulet. Within the fort's walls, a tree-climbing park welcomes visitors of all ages.
Saint-Pierre Church contains fragments of 14th-century stained glass windows, classified as historic monuments.

Two comments:
Point 1: the signpost for the GRP (path on the right towards Malouinière Launay-Ravily) is not visible.
Point 8: no footpath visible along the D74.
