Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Saulny community hall.

(S/E) Leave the car park and turn left towards the EGO factory. Take a small flight of steps on the right and follow the path along the fence. When you reach the tarmac road (Rue de Vigneulles), turn left and follow this road for 450 m. Then turn right for about 80 m until you reach the start of a path on the left.

(1) Turn onto this path running alongside a field and follow it until you reach a wider track (Chemin des Cumenelles). Continue straight on until you reach Rue du Chemin Noir, in the commune of Lorry-lès-Metz.

(2) Continue straight on along Rue de Carcassonne. Opposite No. 12 bis, turn right and, after No. 20, turn left onto Route de Vigneulles. Follow this road, which winds several times, until, after No. 95, you come out onto Grand’Rue.

(3) Cross this road at the pedestrian crossing, turn left and stay on the right-hand pavement until No. 50. Turn right onto Rue des Écoles (slightly uphill) then, after the Salle des Fêtes, turn right onto a dirt track known as Ruelle de Moitange.

(4) Continue straight on uphill along Chemin du Planty, which passes through a wooded area, and at the top you will reach a wide dirt track, Chemin des Lorrains.

(5) Turn left and follow this wide, gently sloping dirt track until you reach a new path on the right.

(6) Turn onto this path towards Fort de Plappeville and follow the path running above the fort on the right: narrow path at height, do not stray from the path, risk of falling within the military structure). You will emerge onto a lay-by in front of the fort’s entrance (no entry).

(7) Turn left, follow a tarmac road and, after passing a barrier, you will come out onto the road between Lessy and Plappeville at the Col de Lessy.

(8) Turn right and follow the stony track towards the Terres Blanches limestone plateau until you reach a Fork in the road.

(9) Turn left, follow the path which slopes to the left to cross the plateau and continue to a power line at elevation 342.

(10) Turn right onto a stony path, continue straight on and cross a large stony path in the Bois des Prussiens. After this junction, veer slightly right onto a small stony path that descends towards the D51.

(11) Cross the road carefully and take the path opposite which descends (caution: slippery when wet) towards a small stream; cross this to reach a fairly wide track. Turn right and follow this track to the Moulin en Mi, on your left.

(12) After the mill, take the first path uphill on the left and follow it for 200 m, passing between two walls. Turn left onto the Chemin de la Source and walk uphill to the next crossroads.

(13) Turn right and follow this wide path through the woods for 1 km.

(14) At the three-way junction, veer right and follow a dirt track between the fields.

(15) Turn left and take the path downhill towards the mill.

(16) Leave the mill on your left and turn right onto Chemin du Moulin, running alongside a fenced-off playground. Continue straight on and enter the village of Saulny via Rue de Mallemat, then
Vigneulles to no. 12.

(17) Turn left into the Rue des Primevères (a dead-end street), go right then immediately left to cross the Ruisseau de Saulny over a wooden bridge. Continue straight on via the Passage de la Chadotte to emerge onto Rue de Metz. Turn right and after 300 m, you will reach the car park of the Saulny community hall (S/E).

Having carried out a recce beforehand, I altered the route on the day of the walk to avoid the muddy and tricky section after point 11. Once we reached the road linking Lorry to Amanvillers, we turned right towards Lorry and, after about 300 metres, took the Chemin de l’Eau to rejoin the route. Otherwise, a lovely, well-shaded walk.

A good route, but a bit disappointing on the 1 km stretch of tarmac. A moderate route

Thank you for sharing this hike, which is part suburban and part countryside
I followed the route on my GPS and shortened it between points 5 and 11 as it’s a very well-known area where I often walk my dog, and between point 13 and the start for time’s sake.
I agree with the previous review (it’s not going to change overnight!), tricky section after 11 on a slope, quite muddy and with fallen trees.
The rest is fine. We came across walkers with and without dogs, joggers and cyclists, but it would be surprising not to on a Sunday morning!

As mentioned in the route description, there is a very slippery, sloping section at point 11 (after crossing the road between Lorry and Amanvillers). Furthermore, fallen trees on the slope make it very difficult to get through....
