The Fort de l'Infernet from the Sommet des Anges

In summer, when the Montgenèvre ski lifts are open, there is an easy walk to the Fort de l'Infernet, which offers exceptional views of the Briançon valleys from the top station of the Gondrans chairlift.

Description of the walk

Park in the free car park at the Chalmettes cable car station in summer. Take the cable car to the upper station. Then descend to the left and take the footpath to the lower station of the Gondrans chairlift. Take the chairlift to the upper station, which is the starting point of the walk.

(S/E) Take a track on the left (east) and pass under the chairlift lines. Shortly afterwards, turn right (north-northwest) onto a path. Pass some ruins and you will come to the Chemin du Janus crossroads.

(1) Follow the path to the left (south). Shortly after, turn right with the path and ignore a path on the left. Continue to the junction with a military road.

(2) Continue straight ahead to go around the Sommet de l'Ombilic to the south. Descend slightly, pass the military buildings of La Cochette and reach a crossroads.

(3) Begin a slight climb towards the south-west. At a fork, turn right and continue climbing. Then turn right at a hairpin bend and follow several switchbacks to reach the Ancien Fort de l'Infernet.

(4) Follow the same route back to the military road junction, passing the La Cochette crossroads.

(2) Take the second road on the right (east-northeast), the old unpaved military road. Ignore a track on the left, head southeast and reach the entrance to the Ancien Fort du Gondran.

(5) Go around it on the right and head north-northeast to reach the upper station of the Gondrans chairlift (S/E).

Take the chairlift again, then the Chalmettes gondola lift to return to the Chalmettes car park.
