Hillsides, troglodyte dwellings, vineyards and river in Chinon

This beautiful and varied route takes you past a hillside of troglodyte houses, through some of the most beautiful plots of the Chinon vineyards - Le Clos de l'Olive, Le Clos Guillot, Le Chêne Vert, Le Coteau de Noiré - and back through the woods along a small stream that flows into the Vienne.

Description of the walk

Departure from Place Jeanne d'Arc (free car park).

(S/E) Take Rue Hoche, next to the pharmacy, and go up to the square. Go around the Saint-Mexme Collegiate Church on the left.

(1) At the corner of the collegiate church, turn right onto a small path (Rue du Pitoche). Continue along Rue du Coteau de Sainte-Radegonde and follow theGR®48(red and white markings). At the next fork, turn right. The path overlooks the town, passes some cave dwellings and reaches the Sainte-Radegonde Chapel (inside, there is a 12th-century fresco).

(2) Continue along the path and descend to the well, the remains of a 6th-century pagan sanctuary.

(3) Cross Rue de la Roche-Faucon at the pedestrian crossing and take the stairs opposite (Passage des Courtières). You will come out onto Chemin des Courtières. Follow it to the right with the GR®. You will overlook Clos de L'Olive and pass Clos Guillot, two renowned vineyards in the Chinon appellation.

(4) When you reach the tarmac road (opposite Clos du Chêne Vert - the oak tree is clearly visible at the top of the ridge), turn right to leave theGR®48. After about 50 metres, take the path on the left that climbs up through the vineyards. When you reach a plot of vines planted parallel to the hillside, take the path on the left to go around the plot and climb up to the observatory.

(5) Turn right in front of the observatory and follow the path to the tarmac road. Then follow the road to the right (the road is located on the route taken by Joan of Arc in 1429 on her arrival in Chinon). As you descend, note the Coteau du Noiré on your right.

(6) Opposite the Clos de la Grille, take the path on the left through the vineyards. Cross the road and continue straight ahead. After about 200 metres, take a path on the right.

(7) At the end, cross a stream over a small bridge made of branches (take care). Then turn left and follow the stream.

(8) At the end, cross the D21 (be careful) and follow it to the right, passing under the railway bridge (built in 1872 to Gustave Eiffel's plans). When the street turns right, continue straight ahead, as close as possible to the river. Follow the Promenade des Docteurs Mattrais and walk along the Vienne on your left. Further on, cross the road to reach the Place Jeanne d'Arc car park (S/E).

A lovely route offering beautiful views of the town and surrounding area. The section featuring the troglodyte dwellings is truly remarkable. It alone makes this walk worthwhile. We didn't find the small bridge at point 7 particularly difficult to navigate. A beautiful route through the vineyards of Chinon.

A beautiful route that passes by the troglodyte chapel of Ste Radegonde and vineyards along streams in the woods
Some elevation changes
Be careful at the end at point 7, as crossing the stream is tricky: there is a small log to stand on and another slightly higher up to hold on to. It's doable, but take care with children

A very interesting route with beautiful elevation changes between town and countryside, allowing you to discover part of Chinon's rich heritage. We extended it at the start along the Vienne river towards the town hall and the fortress, then followed Rue du Coteau Saint-Martin, which leads to Saint-Mexme Collegiate Church. This adds just over a kilometre to the route. Worth doing again on a sunny day to make the most of the hillsides and beautiful views.

A very beautiful hike, especially the first part, which showcases the beauty of Chinon's troglodyte landscapes. We even had the rare opportunity to visit the Sainte-Radegonde chapel. Many thanks to the author of this hike, which allowed us to have a wonderful time as a family!
Unfortunately, the bridge/footbridge had been destroyed when we arrived. However, with a little effort and determination, it was possible to cross the stream by jumping to the other side, despite the mud. A tree. We were a group of seven (aged 20 to 57) and everything went smoothly. On the contrary, it created some wonderful memories!
I highly recommend it.

Hello,

Very beautiful route.
However, the AARRGG pipe was broken and the stream cannot be crossed by a group of 30 people... especially when they are no longer young!
The footbridge has not been repaired.
If I were from the area, I would rebuild it. I have already repaired one in Ille-et-Vilaine.

The bridge is still very difficult, if not impassable

It's true that it can be a bit complicated sometimes, especially if it's been more recently - it's the children who maintain it, so I'm always happy when we see that the bridge is still there. It's a shame you couldn't come by - maybe next time

Hello, the route itself is interesting, but at No. 7 we turned right onto the Bessé R 75 path, because I tried to cross this famous footbridge made of small tree trunks of uneven diameters in the hollow of the ditch, which was almost 2 metres deep. I managed it because I have very good balance, even though the slopes are very steep and the ground is slippery, but I refused to let my group cross for fear of someone getting hurt. You have to be an acrobat to cross this footbridge and climb up and down the two slopes, and it's not possible to station someone on each side to help the other hikers.
Apart from that, it's a beautiful route. Best regards. Bernard BIGOT.
