Markstein station car park, near the junction of Route de Crêtes and Route de Guebwiller D430.
(S/E) Descend towards the ski slopes via the Blue Triangle and Red Triangle marked trails towards Steilebach. Pass under the chairlifts that carry mountain bikes up to the bike park. Follow the Red Triangle and pass under other chairlifts to arrive at the Steinlebach Farm Inn.
(1) Continue straight ahead towards Oberlauchen (Red Triangle). After a left-hand bend, the path curves and passes over a stream. You will arrive at a fork in the road.
(2) Leave the red triangle path and take the unmarked path on the left that climbs towards the Oberlauchen Pass. Stay on this path, which ends in a steep climb near a large information board.
(3) Exit the woods and take the path to the right marked with a red disc. Follow the red and blue discs to reach the summit of Lauchenkopf and continue on to Nonselkopf.
(4) The summit is not marked on the IGN 25 paper map (only a sign on site).
Continue along the Blue Disc for about 600 m to find a cross path.
(5) Turn left onto the gravel path to reach the road, cross it and take the path on the right (red/white/red rectangle) towards Uff Rain.
(6) From the Uff Rain farmhouse inn, continue left towards Hahnenbrunnen, following the red/white/red markings. Enter the woods; at the exit, you can stop at the Salzbach farmhouse inn.
(7) Continue along the red/white/red path, heading south until you reach the forest entrance.
(8) The path turns right. Ignore the turn-off to the left and continue to the Hahnenbrunnen refuge (Mulhouse Touring Club).
(9) At the Col du Hahnenbrunnen, do not cross the Route des Crêtes, but head towards Markstein-Grand Ballon (red rectangle orGR® 5).
(10) At the Breitfirst sign, cross the road, and after the car park, continue towards Markstein-Grand Ballon on theGR®5. The path approaches the road and comes to a blockhouse. Continue to the crossroads.
(11) Cross the Route des Crêtes. After the metal barrier for cows, follow the signs for Markstein via theGR® 5. The path runs along the road on the left below. Pass behind the buildings and the Hôtel Restaurant du Markstein, leaving the summer toboggan run on your right, to reach the car park where you started (S/E).
