The Col du Chaberton

The Col du Chaberton precedes the summit of the same name; the hike starting from Montgenèvre takes the hiker through two distinct areas: the new ski resort and the old military fortifications.

Description of the walk

Park on the road leading to the Village du Soleil in Montgenèvre, on the left-hand side before the old border post.
(S/E) Walk down to the lower station of the Mont Quitaine chairlift. Cross to the left to join the Rio Secco path. Stay on this path (at the first junction, ignore the path on the left) to begin a gentle descent leading to a track running alongside the Rio Secco.
Quickly take the correct path on the left, cross the stream via the footbridge and, following the left bank, reach the valley floor. Cross the stream again and pass in front of the Bergerie des Baïsses.
Continue along the path which, winding through the grass, climbs until it joins theGR®5.

(1) Turn right onto it and, after a gentle climb, reach the Chaberton crossroads (signpost).
Take the path on the right, cross the Rio Secco and then begin the long climb towards the Col.
Pass in front of the old Baraque des 7 Fontaines.

(2) Then follow the yellow markings to reach the Col du Chaberton.
Take the path on the left to reach the ruined forts.

(3) Descend via the same route, taking a short detour to the Rocher Rouge chairlift, and head towards the junction ofthe GR®5and the sheepfold.

(1) Stay on the track on the right bank of the Rio Secco, which also forms part of theGR®5. Return to the car park (S/E).

  2. 1 : km 2.09 - alt. 2,052 m - GR5 junction
  3. 2 : km 3.27 - alt. 2,210 m - Former 3 Fontaines hut
  4. 3 : km 5.4 - alt. 2,602 m - Col du Chaberton
  5. S/E : km 10.39 - alt. 1,851 m

Notes

Water point at the pipe at the Bergerie des Baïsses.
Shelter in the Col forts (no roof, wind protection only).
(2) Cabane des 7 Fontaines: This is an old military fort which, in 2007, was hit by a massive avalanche that destroyed its walls; only the floor and a few centimetres of wall remain.

Worth a visit

Le Chaberton: this summit lies 500m above the pass at an altitude of 3,131m. It is well worth a visit, as up there eight turrets, now in ruins, once supported the guns that faced Briançon. And the remains of this colossal structure are clearly visible.

A hike undertaken in early August in fine, cool and windy weather. The start of the hike winds through the forest – very pleasant – then, at the Baïsse chalet, the landscape turns rocky. The path is marked out among the boulders and climbs steadily up to the pass, where there is a 360° view. You can clearly see the path leading up to the fort, but that’s an extra 500 metres, and it was too windy. Not recommended with children.

A lovely walk to enjoy in the cool of the morning.
But be careful on the descent. The very stony path can cause a dangerous fall. I’ve experienced this myself and came away with a few bruises and grazes, fortunately nothing serious.

A lovely walk. We extended the route to the summit, which is very easily accessible via a good path.
