Description of the walk

The hike starts at the end of the road that leads to the recently built Refuge du Lac de la Grande Léchère.
However, it is advisable to park in the car park at the side of the road, from where a small path leads to the start of the hike in 7 minutes.

(S/E) Follow the mountain track for about 4 km until you reach the signpost for Mère des Eaux at an altitude of 2,010 m, ignoring the tracks and paths that branch off to either side. This is a moderately ascending balcony track offering unobstructed views.

(1) On the way, you will pass a chalet used by shepherds. Continue on until you reach Mère des Eaux.

(2) Continue along the path on the left, which climbs a little more steeply to La crête Maxet (sign at an altitude of 2,100 m), allowing a good twenty minutes.

(3) Turn sharply left towards Col de Montjoie, which you will reach in about thirty minutes.

(4) Descend via the same route.

(5) At an altitude of 1820m, leave the track and take a path that climbs up to the right towards Grand Praz, initially heading south.
Reach Grand Praz and take a contemplative break there.

(6) Locate an isolated chalet and continue your descent along a barely visible path through the meadow. It faces almost due south and leads to another chalet.

(7) Pass under the chalet and take a path that initially heads east, then turns south-west to rejoin the track.

(8) At the Prés de la Pierre sign, continue downhill to reach Lac de la Grande Lauzière.

(9) Retrace your steps to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Directional signs between (1) and (4).
No markings between (5) and (8).

This hike crosses alpine pastures where a flock of sheep spends the summer. In addition to the family who looks after it, the flock is guarded by dogs, including two Patou sheepdogs.

Worth a visit

Stay at the beautiful, brand-new Refuge du Lac de la Grande Léchère, where the cuisine is well worth a visit. Large terrace for relaxing in front of the Aiguilles d'Arves.

A very beautiful hike following the description. The passage to the PAZ cross offers magnificent views. The access road from Montgellafrey to the lake is very impressive, even in summer and on dry roads! The walk is really worth it. A beautiful flock of sheep and two sheepdogs.

After leaving the car at Place de la Madeleine in Saint-François-Longchamp 1650, we set off from Le Replat (a hamlet near Montgellafrey) towards the top of the resort at " Perette" via a pleasant path that avoids the resort and the Col de la Madeleine road, then returned along the route described to the top of the Col Montjoie via the most challenging part of the hike. Beautiful view of the Aiguilles d'Arves, the Cheval Noir and the Étendart. The descent was towards Lac de la Léchère, where the slope is gentler after La Mère des Eaux. Then, crossing Les Vermettes, a sign will show you the direction to take for Longchamp and the end of the hike.

A very beautiful hike following the description
At the pass, there is a hut open to hikers and informative panels on the walls overlooking Epierre, which are very interesting.
The view from the PAZ cross is magnificent
It should be noted that the access road to Montgellafrey is very impressive, even in summer and when the road is dry!

We didn't follow the suggested route exactly.
We climbed up to the pass from the last hairpin bend before the Col de la Madeleine on the D213 (altitude 1,894 m, Lauzière chairlift). The path we took joined the suggested route at point no. 4.
The walk is really worth it. There was a beautiful herd of sheep and goats (Rove goats with magnificent horns), two dogs and two patous, but they were all being looked after by a shepherd.
The information panel inside the hut at the pass is very interesting.

A very pleasant hike. A gentle start, apart from the constant slight incline, but no problem. The end is a little more challenging but accessible to all. It's a shame the clouds were out. A complete change of scenery.
On the way, a herd guarded by three sheepdogs... don't try to approach them. A quick chat with the shepherd.
Saw and photographed flowers. Bearded bellflowers, etc., and very close to the pass, some superb houseleeks to the left of the path next to a tiny lake.
On the descent to the foot of the waterfall, cotton grass and... chives galore.

A beautiful walk, at the top of the avalanche barriers from the beginning of the century.
