Le Climont, setting off from Steige

Steige nestles at the bottom of the Villé valley. Park in front of the town hall.

(S/E) Set off straight ahead along the path marked with Yellow Triangles. Leave this route after 200 m to take the path on the left, thus avoiding the road. You’ll reach a crossroads.

(1) Here, rejoin the Yellow Triangle markings, continue straight ahead and you’ll reach another crossroads.

(2) Take the path on the right, marked with a double Yellow Triangle and Blue Saltire, cross a track and continue straight ahead along the path leading to the Col de la Charbonnière. You’ll reach the highest point of the walk and the GR®531.

(3) Turn left onto it and now follow the Blue Rectangle markings along this pleasant downhill path. Approach the road, walk alongside it on the right, then on the left, to reach the crossroads at a place called La Guiche.

(4) Cross this road, stay on the GR®, and reach the Col de Steige.

(5) Pass to the left of the Col de Steige restaurant, then continue to the end of Lac de Steige. Carry on along the GR® and its Blue Rectangle markings until you reach a junction in the Bois de Colroy-la-Roche.

(6) Here, there are two options:
- short route: keep left on the GR® and head down to the ‘Carrefour des Myrtilles’ junction, near a farm shed,
- long route (as shown on the map): take the path marked with a Red Disc opposite, heading towards “Climont Tour”. Cross the D214 with care, then turn right onto the path marked ‘Blue Ring’. Soon after, follow the path marked ‘Yellow Cross’ and begin the ascent along a steep and technical path , featuring numerous sections over large boulders (not recommended for children under 8).
After a few hairpin bends, you’ll reach the summit of Climont.

(7) Descend opposite the tower along a stony path, still following the Yellow Cross and Red-White-Red Rectangle markings. You’ll reach a Y-junction.

(8) Continue straight ahead, following the Yellow Cross markings only, until you reach the D214 at the top of the hamlet of Climont. Turn left onto it and follow the roadwith care until you reach a farm shed.

(9) Turn right onto the GR®532, then follow the yellow rectangle and Yellow Diamond markings. Begin the day’s final ascent here. Pass just wide of the summit of the mountain. Emerge at the summit at a junction.

(10) Turn left onto the path marked with Yellow Diamonds and Yellow Rectangles, heading towards Pransureux. Pass above this hamlet and a mountain refuge of the same name, then come to another junction.

(11) Carry on straight ahead and now follow the Green Triangle markings. Go round the Champ des Fontaines to reach a path near a telecoms mast. Turn left onto this path, passing above the Steige community hall. Then leave the farm on your left and head back up the road. Walk past the school and emerge at the town hall car park (S/E).
